Jasper wrath 1971 - jasper wrath (1971 psych with prog touches)
During their short recording career, Hamden, Connecticut's Jasper Wrath (Robert Gennette, Chris Hawke, Michael Soldan and Philip Stoltie - the limited liner notes don't provided a clue as to who played what), managed to release one instantly obscure 45 ('Did You Know That' b/w 'It's Up To You', Sunflower catalog number SNF 5003) and an equally rare 1971 album. That's unfortunate since their album's a largely undiscovered treat.
First off, we'll be honest and tell you this is one of those releases that didn't grab us the first time we listened to it. Occasional woodwinds made it a little too laidback and mellow for our tastes ... That said, having spun it a couple of times, it's become a personal favorite.
Signed by MGM's short-lived Sunflower subsidiary, the quartet's self-titled 1971 debut features an entertaining hybrid of commercial, lite-psychedelic and occasional progressive moves. Produced by Joey Levine (probably explaining the commercial edge), Jim Carroll and the band, "Jasper Wrath" wasn't exactly the year's most original offering. On the other hand, the collection was full of strong melodies (imagine Gentle Giant had they gone in a more mainstream direction, or America had they gone for a progressive sound), some wonderful harmony work ('Autumn') and more than it's share of tasty guitar ('Mysteries (You Can Find Out)'). Highlights included the rocker 'Did You Know That' and the extended, progressive workout 'Roland of Montevere'. (The album was originally released with a lyric insert. Yes, our copy has the insert.)
"Jasper Wrath" track listing:
(side 1)
1.) Look To the Sunrise (Jeff Cannata - Philip Stoltie) - 2:55
2.) Mysteries (You Can Find Out) (Jeff Cannata) - 3:50
3.) Autumn (Michael Soldan - Jeff Cannata) - 4:45
4.) Odyssey (Jeff Cannata - Philip Stoltie) - 7:10
(side 1)
1.) Did You Know That (Wrath - Joey Levine) - 2:55
2.) Drift Through Our Cloud (Wrath - Philip Stoltie) - 3:30
3.) Portrait: My Lady Angelina (Michael Soldan - Jeff Cannata) - 5:00
4.) Roland of Montevere (Giannotti - Michael Soldan - Jeff Cannata) - 9:50

Catfish - Get Down (Hard Detroit Bluesrock 1970)
Catfish has been called an "American folk blues hero" and has been a mainstay on the American Blues music scene for three decades now! He has twenty four albums to his credit, comprised almost totally of original material. "Catfish Blues" and "Like A Big Dog Barkin’" on the Wildcat label, and "Eyewitness Blues" on Genes CD were released in 1994 and 1995. His first album of children’s songs "Adventures at Catfish Pond", on Music for Little People label was released in May of 1996. The album won the NAPA Golden Award as best children’s music of 1996. His 1998 release "Bare Necessities"(on Chicken Legs Music) finds him in a solo acoustic setting, with lowdown funky blues and soulful ballads. His 1999 release "Twenty Years" features performances from concerts and radio broadcast and includes the only version now available of "Boogie Man Gonna Git Ya", as well as other rare gems. His 2002 release "Let's Eat" is a best of collection of his best known food songs of which there are many! Both of his latest albums are available on Chicken Legs Music. All of his albums prior to the 1990's are hard to find except for the first Catfish Band album "Get Down", which Sony/Epic re-released in the mid 1990's, due to demand for it overseas.
Catfish found his calling early on. While growing up in Detroit, he was sneaking into Motown Records Hitsville studio to catch the Four tops and the Supremes and grooving to R&B and Blues while his contemporaries gravitated to the Beatles. In the late 1960’s he formed the Catfish Band and led them out of Detroit into national prominence.
By 1973 Catfish had settled into Washington, DC where he was packing them in at Desperado’s, Childe Harold and the Cellar Door with what the Washington City Paper describes as "his cheerfully muscular blues & rockin’ boogie". He made a few friends along the way too. He became a regular opener for Bonnie Raitt and Little Feat, who also started showing up on his recordings. When he formed the Chicken Legs Band in 1981, he was joined by Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney and Sam Clayton. Their final tour hit twenty one cities and sold out every one.By 1982 Catfish had headed west to California where he lived for the next 17 years. Along with Paul Barrere he formed the Bluesbusters in 1984. They recorded two albums for Landslide Records and toured for many years, until Little Feat was reformed in the late 1980’s.In 1999 Catfish founded the Hillbilly Funk Allstars with T Lavitz, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney, and Vassar Clements. Their first tour was well received, with great turn outs, will they ever tour again? He continues to work solo acoustic and with his new electric band in the mid-atlantic area, as well as festivals around the globe.Today Catfish Hodge lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where he says "the air is fresh and the mountains are good for the healing of the soul." After thirty five years on the road and twenty four albums having been released, he is still electrifying music fans with his powerful and spiritual style of original music!

Mountain Bus - Sundance(1971 acid psych)
Tremendous early 70's psych out of Chicago with an obvious Grateful Dead influence. Starts out strong and gets stronger, with some really high quality space jams towards the end of the record. This band's version of "I Know You Rider" is perhaps the best version I've ever heard, blowing away versions by The Dead and Hot Tuna. Gorgeous vocal harmonies and searing leads make this the standout cut for sure. It makes the hair on my arms stand up! This album was recently reissued on Gear Fab records in compact disc format, and it sounds really good. There are quite a few bonus live tracks tacked on to here that I could really do without, as the vocals are mixed way low and the whole thing has kind of a murky sound, but the proper studio album comes highly recommended.

OSCAR - OSCAR (Prog- usa 1974)

A very interesting album which disappointed me some but left me wondering how this band could make really good music on some tracks but then have horrible sounding blather on other tracks. Not that inconsistency is unusual in music, but the better tracks showcase a sound similar to some of the best psychedelic offerings of the day. The two spoken tracks are throwaways and should have been deleted. The rest of the bad tracks not only showcase bland and sometimes ridiculous lyrics, but the vocals on some tracks really detract from the music itself. Examples include the first track "7th Generation Mutation" which almost made me delete the album before listening to the rest of the tracks. The next two tracks "Canyon Woman" and "Devil and the Sea" are much more accessible. The next four tracks range from mediocre to less than stellar. The title track is probably the best song, featuring some excellent organ. The conclusion of the album also inconsistent. I will have to give the album another listen before determining whether i should keep it or not. Anyone interested in interesting psychedelia of the time should look into it.

PSYCH...Part1!
Omnibus (1970-great psych fuzz)
1970 United Artists release by Boston based band combining moody Westcoast style organ sound with fuzzy psych guitar. This trio hailed from Boston. The album, which was recorded in New York and produced by Steve and Eric Nathanson (who were the producers of Boffalongo) Recommended.

Kopperfield - Tales Untold (great heavy prog 1974)
A voi!
Limited pressed lp by this band from Michigan, faithfully reissued by the folks at GearFab. Melodic rock/prog style, similar to Boston, Styx, even a little Yes.
The album kills from the opener to the last power-chord. Record collectors are paying about 1000 $ for this item, but who cares because Gear Fab had done a CD re-release with nine bonus cuts from 1972 and 1975.

ELLISON - ELLISON (HARD PSYCH 1972)
Excellent Sabbath-inspired early 1970's doom from these French Canadians. Sounding like a much more psychedelic yet somehow subdued Sab, these guys reach for the milky way with their heroin/LSD-25 speedball approach. Totally wasted 'Head' rock, cheap yet delicious analog production values, early Priest soundalike guitar runs, and starter-fluid-huffing vocals all add up to one hell of a brain cell killer. Dark and gloomy, like coming down off acid on a rainy fall morning. "Winter Slutch" and "Strawberry Rain"(Killer Title!) are two of the best cuts, but the record peaks (pun intended) with "Untruth Story", a mindmelting knife-in-back-pocket-right-next-to-the-brush burnout heroin anthem. The singer laments his girl's sadness/need to do smack: "She Asked/She Asked/She Asked Me For Dope" but ultimately gives in and cops her a bag. Then, later, we get the brilliant "I Know/I Know/I Know You're So Tired" repeated over and over while a searing, wicked guitar lead soars over the top. TOTAL drug rock, possibly the best example of hesher 1970's reality I've ever heard. Remember the Eight Is Enough episode when Tommy Bradford gets caught doing bongs in his bedroom by Dick Van Patten? This is probably the music Tommy was listening to on those giant headphones...."If you take a lot, it'll kill you....." Wasted Forever. Ferociously Stoned.

1:http://link-protector.com/310591/
Very little is known about Joe Prichard or his sidekicks, except that the band, which hailed from Missouri, drew its inspiration from influences far and wide, resulting in each of the 5 tracks being very different in character, ranging from the power chords and staccato guitar breaks of the Jimmy Page variety, to the throaty sax of 12-bar blues specialists Climax Blues Band as well as the guitars of ZZ Top. There’s even a 9-minute jam a la Jethro Tull or Traffic with flute and sax giving a decidedly jazzy feel to proceedings.

McDonald & Sherby - Catharsis(1969 acid psych)
Kinda cool psych prog rock album, with some definite religious lyrics."Addoranne" is a mellow spacey 10 minute epic, followed by a rockin "Sharks Around Blood". Lots of nice keyboards, and some trippy psych guitar on "Space Beam".

Saint Steven - Over the Hills (us. psych 1969)
An interesting psych/prog album with competent musicianship and excellent production quality. Heavy in places and poppy/bluesy/mellow in others with electric & acoustic guitars, bass, drums, organ, layered vocals and sound effects. 'Gladacadova' is quite poppy, with an unusual, shifting rhythm, swirling effects and psychedelic guitar. 'Animal Hall' reminds me of a cross between The Pretty Things (S.F. Sorrow) and the Edgar Broughton Band, with elephant sound effects. 'Sun in the Flame' reminds me of a cross between Cream & The Churchills, with some intricate guitar playing.
Sounds a little dated now, but not cheesily so. At the time I imagine it was fairly cutting edge stuff, but probably came on the scene at a time when psychedelia was becoming unfashionable. On the whole, not a bad album, but not a great one either.
