Autosalvage - Autosalvage(1968 heavy psych)

Extremely metallic psychedelic classic that is very unusual and intriguing. I have a vinyl pressing that is extremely loud and far better than a CD issue I have heard. The sound is reminiscent of the crunching rhythm guitar / bass / drum sound of Revolver tracks like Taxman and Dr Robert with a dense web of counterpoint between tightly structured bass and electric guitar lines, a little reminiscent of Marquee Moon. The sound is quite fascinating and the dense counterpoint metallic approach is sustained throughout the album. The vocals are a weakness however - it is the tracks that really stand out as a tour de force of arranging structured guitar and bass parts. This is psychedelia but experimental and definitely of interest to fans of electric guitar and metallic sounds. Another fascinating one-album band and a personal favourite.

Midnight Sun - Midnight Sun(1971 psych jazz prog)

This version of the album was released in 1970 – it's excellent refined changing tempo progressive jazz-rock with complex rhythms and expanded jazzy chords. The music was composed mainly by Bronsted and Hasselmann and the zen-buddhist lyrics were written by Andy Levin and Bisgaard. This album has an interesting history. In 1970, when the record was about to appear in shops, Lars Bisgaard left the group. He was replaced by Allan Mortensen (ex-Tears). Musicians made the decision to re-record the album. Some tracks were re-mastered with new vocal, some were re-recorded, two tracks; Nobody and B.M. (that were recorded on the original album as one composition) were split into two. The only new composition is Sippin’ Wine, written by Mortensen. The vinyl appeared with the same cover design – beautiful painting by Anne Marie Brauges. Soon after, the Canadian group Rainbow Band registered their name and the Danish band had to change it. Under a new name Midnight Sun, they released the same album again in different sleeve design by Roger Dean. Let’s try to compare both records. Certainly, they seem to be very similar, but the first one is more refined and tasteful. Bisgaard’s vocal is calm comparing to Mortensen’s more aggressive and jazzy, almost David Clayton Thomas style. The whole Midnight Sun’s version of the album has a feeling more like late 60s early 70s fusion/soul/jazz-rock, while still retaining a hard prog rock sound as well.

Quiet Sun - Mainstream (1975 canterbury)

So strange that this album is so overlooked. Yet the formation is upstanding: Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera on guitar, Matching Mole's Bill McCormick on Bass, This Heat's Charles Haywardon drums and good jazzy keyboard player Dave Jarrett.
The album is greatly accomplished, with a unique sound fusing Canterbury, Space Rock and Hard Rock in a very personal psychedelic sound. Amazing rhythm section, uplifting guitar and bass "warm" sound à la "Here Come the Warm Jets" reminding of Matching Mole and very good electric piano work. The tracks are all instrumental, with a jazzy feeling, and the album is a complete standout which should be in every music collection, especially if you love progressive rock.
