Color Humano - Vol 2&3 (arg heavy psych/blues 72 73)

"Color Humano 3" seemed to re-find the creative songwriting of the first album, perhaps featuring a better production for their 70s' heavy prog rock, and quite interesting instrumental passages, for instance in the long "Las historias que tengo".
The tongue-in-cheek "Mañana por la noche", "Hace casi 2000 años" & "Cosas rústicas" (aka "Coto de caza") must be the highlights of this final Color Humano's album...not a big fan of the Edelmiro Molinari's vocals, nevertheless I like the album, it's quite ace during some passages, a bit so-so at times though.
Color Humano never reached the excellence of other Argentine bands of its time, like Invisible, Almendra, Vox Dei or Manal, but will be reminded as part of the idealized 70s, and for albums like this one.

Polifemo - Polifemo II (great arg hard prog jazz)

This second and last Polifemo's album from 1977 consists of 6, mostly long tracks: hard progressive-oriented, still featuring heavy riffage by David Lebon, though with a more elaborate structure, sort of crossover between Deep Purple and Focus perhaps.
Notwithstanding the Lebon's songwriting and vocals give the band a distinct and privative idiosyncrasy, which keeps it miles away from the generic 70s' prog.
"Viene del sol", "Trópico de Cáncer" and "Dualidad" look like the standouts of "Polifemo II", though this LP is pretty less interesting than the debut; some Afro percussion and jazz fusion meanders try to give it an attractive tone, though the group was over already.
An interesting band Polifemo while did last: a good first album, and this passable though inferior epilogue.

Fe - Fe (1972 arg hard rock)

Un buon disco di musica rock-hard rock direttamente dall'argentina...non ho giudizi particolarmente negativi ne particolarmente positivi...mi ha lasciato una buona impressione, diciamo una sensazione di un po' di tempo passato con della buona musica, tuttavia manca sempre il colpo da "killer" per rendere unico e speciale l'album.

Síntesis - Síntesis (1976 - rare arg superb jazz rock)

Formed in Rosario (city 300Km North of Buenos Aires), this unknown group recorded an album in March 1976 -only in two days!
The LP features six instrumental tracks raging from progressive to symphonic, but mainly jazz-rock. The trio is joined by Sergio Polizzi (next Soluna and Bubu) on violin, Oscar Tissera on flute, Mariano Zarich and Chachi Ferreyra on saxes and Santiago Aldana on clarinet.
This monotonous album was released through a private pressing with an aptly drawn fold out cover. It was never reissued and is hard to get.

Agnus - Pinturas y expresiones(1980 prog psych prog-folk )

Another lost treasure from Argentina. Agnus released this album, its only one and it’s a shame there wasn’t any more. The album contains 4 beautiful tracks, which bear the influence of Mia and Italian bands such as PFM. The flute has a major role here, giving this a slightly ethereal sound, which is reinforced by the heavenly sound of the female vocals. The beautiful thing here is the multiple female vocals sung together and the male vocals in opposition to them.

In the first track XXI Century the flute plays a certain tune that is then played around by the band and developed more. It is sometimes reminiscent of Camel and Gotic. As someone said, it ends a bit abruptly, and it’s a shame. However, this song contains some beautiful female vocal performance and also an enchanting flute playing. The second track is a bit rockier in nature, again with the flute setting up the scene for the rest to come and complete the picture. The guitars and the banjo here have an important role as well and they give the track a nice spacey, old and native sound as well as add the necessary rock element in this song and in the others as well. Born the day starts with some more angelic female voices. It continues as a light classic rock tune with a guitar playing a bit alone. Then the music fades away while the singer continues and the flute comes in and plays along with the singing, all accompanied by the drums that come back as well. Then start a nice vocal part of the male singer with some finally noticeable bass part and the same guitar from earlier giving its rock sound. The song goes on with some more interesting developments and suffice it to say that it does not linger on the same musical idea for too long and remains interesting to listen to for the whole of its 11:50 minutes (there is even a drum solo). A beautiful and quite original song for sure. The last song King’s History is very different from the rest of the album. It is a folk song (not Latin folk, but rather English folk), with beautiful female and male vocals and a violin that gives the song its flavour. The flute is present here of course as is the banjo. The song changes from jumpy happy tempo to a slow, melancholic mood. The faster rhythm of this song makes you move involuntarily.

Even though the songs are quite long (all first three are longer than 10 minutes), they are composed such that they flow seamlessly and without being boring at all. The only downside is the fact that I feel as if the songs are not developed enough. They could have both developed their musical ideas more and come up with others. But regardless of this, the music is beautiful and very satisfying. This may not be the most original music heard, but it sure is an excellent album, very well performed and it contains some beautiful melodies and vocal parts.

Espíritu - Crisalida

Great prog rock album from Argentina. Crisalida was the debut LP from Espiritu, originally released in 1975 (they had a couple singles released as far back as 1973). Cover artwork is by Juan O. Gatti, same guy responsible for the Crucis album covers. This album is a wonderful, South American take on the Italian prog sound, especially of groups like PFM, Celeste, Biglietto per L'Inferno, Semiramis, etc. with some nice vocal harmonies that sometimes draw comparisons to Yes. You won't find much in the way of Latin/Spanish/South American or tango influences here, but rather of the Italian scene. It's only the vocals (which are in Spanish) that reveal that they aren't Italian. The band consisted of Carlos Goler on drums, Claudio Martinez on bass, Osvaldo Favrot on guitar and backing vocals, Fernando Berge on vocals, and Gustavo Fedel on keyboards. The music tends to the more melodic spectrum of prog, with lots of great guitar from Favrot and wonderful analog keyboards from Fedel (like Hammond organ, Mini Moog, Solina string synth, piano). The music alternates between the most acoustic-end of prog, like PFM and Celeste, and the more heavy, aggressive end like Semiramis, when Favrot uses electric. "La Casa de la Mente" starts off rather electronic, with heavy doses of string synths and Moog, before the music kicks in with that PFM-like vibe. "Polijas Virtudes del Olvido" is a short piece with more of that Italian feel. I love how Gustavo Fedel closed the song with the Mini Moog before seguing in to "Sueños Blancos, Ideas Negras". Here is some really amazing, laid-back atmospheric guitar work I never could have imagined coming from a Latin country! Then the music gets heavy in the Biglietto per L'Inferno, Semiramis, or Il Balletto manner, even the vocals tend more to the hard rock spectrum here, not unlike Il Balletto. "Sabios de Vida" is a piece alternating between more mellow passages dominated by string synths and rocking passages. "Eterna Evidencia" is an instrumental piece with Moog soloing. "Tiempo de Ideas" continues in that Italian-style of prog complete with more great use of vocals. "Hay un Mundo Cerrado Dentro Tuyo" at times brings to mind Yes' "And You and I", especially the bass work. The final cut, "Hay un Mundo Luminoso" is basically two different songs. The first dominated by Hammond organ, with almost a jazzy feel, while the second half is basically a theme repeated, first with piano, then synthesizer. Espiritu proves that prog acts out of Argentina can be up there with many of their European counterparts in terms of quality of music and production. If you didn't know that they were from Argentina, you might think they were from Europe, like Spain (or not paying attention to the vocals, Italy). This album is truly one of the best things I've ever heard from Latin America, proving to everyone there's much more to Argentina than tango. Highly recommended stuff!

Kinda like a Bluesy Buffalo(AUS) combined with Sabbath moves, love the early tracks the best, lyrics in Spanish aswell. Well worth having! Pappo is a talented Hardrock guitarist/songwriter!
