This awesome band came from Munich and made three extraordinary albums on the super-collectable Kuckuk label plus another that never got released until recently. Hennes Herring on KB (mainly Hammond organ), Remi Dreschler on guitars, Moran Neumuller on vocals and winds, Klaus Spöri and Stefan Wisheu on drums and bass respectively made an incredibly tight unit although they were prone to a lot of improvisation moments also. Their music is somewhat similar to early British prog but will gradually evolve to a certain jazz-rock while staying very politically and socially conscious (in the typical German style of those years) although the singing does not hold a big place in their music, their third release (a double) being mostly instrumental. Then Herring will leave the band to form SUBJECT ESQ., that will soon evolve into the excellent SAHARA. The rest of the band will hire a second guitarist and record another excellent album that for some reason never got released but the group will stay active until 78.
In my opinion, besides Embryo, Out Of Focus must have been the best and most original band that ever emerged from my home town. Those guys really carried this type of “Krautrock” spirit of musicians playing for their fun and not for any commercial interests. Mentioning the term “Krautrock” though belonging in some way into this particular scene (since they’ve been also quite drug-inspired obviously) the music they presented here exhibited some blend of psyche folk/blues-rock and jazzy hardrock jammin’ not that far away from bands like Colosseum, Nucleus or Soft Machine. Slight comparisons might be drawn as well to country fellows Kraan and Embryo but this band actually had shown a quite unique and self-contained style. The jazz influence wasn’t here yet as strong as it would be on their third album and comes most obvious in the great 13+ min track “Whispering”. "It's Your Life", "Blue Sunday Morning" and "Fly Bird Fly" are more flute-dominated psyche folk numbers wheras the rest of the tracks reveal superb extended jammin’ with awesome sax and organ play. There’s not one filler on here and especially the instrumental sections are brilliant. If there are a few points to be substracted from the full score than it’s due to the vocal performances by Moran Neumüller which aren’t really that great but the instrumental parts are prevailing here anyway. Actually I’d rate both their second and their third album equally with 90 % on the MPV scale!

ho ripreso a girare per blog e ho visto non so più dove che un tizio cercava questo disco...niente di che, meglio il primo album, pur rimanendo sulle sonorità prog rispetto proprio al precedente lavoro mi sembra molto meno inspirato ance se ci sono dei classici non lo nego(il problema è che io trovo troppo pesanti le profondissime elucubrazioni musicali e questa ne è un classsico esempio, anche se sono sicuro che picerà a moltissimi di voi!)

Vi posto questo disco molto belli di musica prog (ma parliamo pure di un krautrock anche se il gruppo è di origine olandese)Ottime canzoni, ottime musiche prevalentemente con voce maschile (mi pare che sia la traccia 8 quella con una vocalist) e anche sapiente uso dei fiati (io non li amo particolarmente!!!)

The rock group Mr Albert Show from Eindhoven Holland, was formed in 1969 by Bertus Borgers (saxophone, flute and vocals), Roeland Boogaart (on drums), Tom Fautubun (on bass guitar), Eric Lintermans (guitar), and Bonki Bongaerts (organ). The band was named after a roadie. In 1970 their first single, Wild sensation / King of galaxy is released. The vocals on this track are by Floortje Klomp. The sound of this album is a sort of jazzy progressive music with the focus on the saxophone and the organ. This is a pretty cool LP, and would appeal to anyone into the lates 60 early 70s psych/progressive thing. Fairly tight arrangements, and lots of great weirdness here! Recommeneded.

Crossfire - Crossfire (1975 aussie jazz prog)

The debut album from Crossfire is a more daring excursion into jazz/rock than their later material, which was generally soft fusion. There's a strong progressive undertone that's apparent throughout this entire album.
"Funky Funkbump" is a great track and "Inside Out" has a cool intro. Aside from that, there's lost of interesting moments and stuff here for sample fiends. Progressive/jazz.

Che Disco signori e signore!è superato solo dall'ultimo lavoro della band, "Thinkin'" che posterò subito dopo questo...questo potremmo definirlo un disco di assestamento in vista del vero capolavoro di musica Psych...purtroppo non esiste una ristampa adeguata e questo cd si trova solo in formato 2in1 proprio col 2 disco...magari ci facessere una ristampa...ma nel frattempo ho comprato questo perchè non si può fare a meno di canzoni come "evolmia""night is callin'"e "train of life"...apprezzate questo ma aspettate il capolavoro!(pazienza, il prossimo post!)

quando l'ho ascoltato per la prima volta ho avuto questa idea fissa!non ho mai sentito un disco che ti coinvolgesse cosi gia dalla prima song..."John Doe" è una delle più belle canzoni mai sentite!!!! Poi si passa alla 2 alla 3 e alla 4 con avidità!non si può fare a meno di questo disco! Unico neo la song "searcher's life"che passa in feretta vi giuro!

With Banchee's first album said and done, I have no idea where the heavy blaster image came from. I’ve found many websites have plagiarized the description in Fuzz Acid & Flowers whenever they have to illustrate the band’s sound, perpetuating the illusion, but where did Fuzz… get it from? The only thing I can deduce is that it’s based on the band’s second and last release as a heavier slant has pervaded the their sound without slapping your face. Apparently, the two years that had passed had members feeling a bit of their oats. In addition to their well oiled, catchy and elegantly rendered resonance, a wider salvo of solos wire tracks with electricity and exploratory musical pieces resembling jam sessions mushroom sometimes out of nowhere. Still prevalent are the silky, multi-part vocal harmonies that are practically their trademark, and the musicianship, if anything, has gotten even more impressive. Driving with its time-ticking, story-based vocal line is “John Doe”. Overlapping this is a perpetually traveling rhythm that already holds an air of completion, almost admiration, which is more often used to end an album. Unfortunately, if you’re listening to the 2-on-1 cd, the song’s atmosphere is partially clouded ‘cause instead of feeling like you’re listening to the first song on a new album, you assume it’s the tenth song on one 17-track monster, and putting it into perspective gives the track a new flavor of appreciation. A jazzy solo backed by a bounding tempo fades the song out with their newly found heavy verve. The equally hasty “Willya” is entirely sung in harmonics with plenty of solos breaking up verses, but beneath it the entire band is just having a blast, coalescing like a sudden jam at a reunion. “3/4 Song” takes on a quirky, disheveled structure that is sung just as oddly until the stirring chorus solidifies the project. More harmonics stream the title cut with the anomalous ending drum solo and bombastic chorus/eddy the highlights. “Searcher’s Life” starts off I believe side two with more convention with the main focus on a fiery solo that pulls it to a close. Serenity isn’t bashful in the spotlight on the debut, but the first glimpse of it finally floats into view with “Iceberg”. Heartfelt words breathe depression into a pace melancholic, yet softly boisterous finally silenced by an earnest solo. This atmosphere carries over to the opening minutes of “Children of the Universe”, then livens up with a breathless surge of vocals with harmonic bursts as a backdrop. “38”, a double-length track, is half blues, half rock that isn’t mingled, but separated about dead center of the track. A repetitive chorus and piercing solo closes the album. Replacing some elegance with energy has given Banchee more of a ‘70s veneer without overpowering fans of the debut. No new discovery is that the band could play, but now are more freestyle in their approach without sacrificing their penchant for catchy songwriting. Another band deserving of credit that fell by the waste side.

Barde - Barde(1977 folk)

This quartet from Montreal was formed in 1975 and found their brand of Acadian & Celtic reels and jigs popular around the Maritimes, Quebec and overseas in Europe.

They released two albums on the Port Parole label - 'Barde' (1977) and 'Images' (1978) - before suffering a loss of personnel. By 1983's 'Voyage' for Polydor, MacRaghallaigh and Selick had left and the remaining members changed musical direction by incorporating keyboards bass and violin courtesy of studio musicians Joubert, Paquette, and Therrien.

Utilizing a twin Celtic fiddle sound, Guerin led a revamped Barde at the 10th Annual Winnipeg Folk Festival. The band finally disbanded for good shortly thereafter with Guerin marrying and settling in the St. Boniface region of Winnipeg. He became a disc jockey before becoming Artistic Director of The Winnipeg Folk Festival - a position he still holds.

Quantum Jump - Quantum Jump (1976 prog jazz prog)

Not sure how you classify this music (rock, jazz, funk, fusion) but it's good stuff. The musicianship is superb - Mark Warner's guitar playing is exemplary - and had some roots in Canterbury Music(John G. Perry - Caravan). Also of note, Rupert Hine's keyboard work.
The lyrics are interesting, and quite humorous at times. Highlights include Over Rio, The Lone Ranger, and Stepping Rocks.

Quantum Jump - Barracuda (1977)

More of a collective than a regular band as various Penguin Cafes appeared on this one alongside other solo artistes like Rupert Hine and John Perry.
A few nutty credits here and there with "Duff Jones" and "Wax Pole" (who are only in Special Mentions and probably masquerading as other people) thanked for being "fine CHASPS"! Surely a printing error?
For "other players" one Geoffrey Richardson is credited with "Kentish Wheeze Flute" and "Ilkley Brain Flute"! And "Anon" is credited with "surprise overdubs"!
This is the kind of off the wall music you can expect but what the band probably never DID was the hit single which came off the next album,which had the power of sending them into the One Hit Wonder Club later!
They returned or at least a couple of them did,as Sam Beckett and the Hologram who would remain invisible.
Still "The Lone Ranger" went Top 10 and that was that.

Canarios - Ciclos(spa superb prog)

Ancora un disco spettacolare di musica prog!

Los Canarios started off as a typical, run of the mill pop/rock band (probably not unlike Los Bravos, but I'm not sure) and released three albums from 1968 to 1972. I'm sure fans of the pop Canarios were in for a total rude awakening when they released this double album, Ciclos. The band totally went off the prog deep-end and went and adapted Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons in a prog rock setting. The main guy of this band, Teddy Bautista included lots of great analog keyboards like the Moog II-P modular, Mini Moog, VCS-3, ARP 2600, Mellotron M400. Other members included Alain Richard on drums (and tons of percussion), guitarist Antonio Garcia de Diego, Mathias Sanvellian on additional keyboards (piano, organ, RMI electric piano, harpsichord, etc.), and bassist Christian Mellies. Add that with a choir (both male a female), a couple of male vocalists (I bet the not-so-great singer was Teddy Bautista himself), and a female soprano, provided by an Indonesian named Rudmini Sukmawati (in which photos of her make her look Gothic, one scary picture of her makes her look like Marylin Manson!). This is a totally complex and densely layered album which you're not likely to get on the first listen. Lots of really amazing analog synths. In between classical themes are rather bizarre and twisted use of synthesizers. One part finds the band being really silly by having a barbershop quartet sing "Plastic Christmas" with lyrics that go: "It's another plastic Christmas / Santa Claus has died / One more thing to celebrate", suggesting they felt Christmas had became a big load of crap (they should try Christmas here in America some 30 years later, which got so bad I tend to leave the radio and television off that time of year because of the hype and overcommercialization, not to mention worn-out Christmas carols). My only real complaint goes to "Himno a la Armonia Implacable del Fin" (on the fourth and final movement entitled "Cuarto Acto: El Eslabon Recobrado"), I think that piece downright sucks with the overly dramatic and cheesy male operatic vocals and choir. I can live without that, but the rest of the album demonstates why not only is this regarded as one of the best prog albums to come out of Spain, but one of the best prog adaptations of classical aside from Il Rovescio Della Medaglia's Contaminazione. My other complaint is Canarios never followed up Ciclos with perhaps another full-blown prog album, perhaps this time, original band compositions. This was unfortunately their only prog album. Aside from "Himno a la Armonia Implacable del Fin", I truly think this is one of the all-time great prog take on classical music. Totally essential album.

Ibio - Cuevas de Altamira(1979 spa prog)

I hadn't quite warmed up to this album as some others had. Ibio is often regarded as one of Spain's better prog rock bands, but I can't see that myself. I own the LP, on the Movie Play label (the label with the green octagon). The problem I have most is Lily Alegria's singing. Although he sings on only two cuts, I find his wailing style a bit grating to me. But for the most part, this album reminds me of the Italian prog scene, some of the cuts remind me of Il Volo, especially in the string synth department. Also Mellotron is used from time to time, something Il Volo never used. Standard synthesizers are used to, but I haven't been too impressed by that. Forgot to mention it was Mario Gomez Calderon who was responsible for the keyboards. Side one (the first four cuts) tend to be the best, as, to me, side two seems just OK. Not quite essential in my book, but worth having if you collect obscure prog like me.

una sorta di prog tranquilla alla jethro tull basata su una solida sezione flauto che rende moltissimo nel brano.
però non confondetevi a mio avviso i j.t. erano più sul versante folk prog rispetto a questo gruppo e anzi anche ad un ascolto
approfondito non si riconosce lo stile "spagnolo" tipico di altri dischi!consigliato!


If you're expecting any Spanish cultural references (like Triana, Ibio, Mezquita, etc.), you won't find it here. What you get is basically early prog that leans more on the psychedelic side (though recorded in 1971, it has a more late '60s sound to it), with surprisingly a strong hippie vibe. if no one told you they were from Spain, you could be easily fooled for perhaps certain British or German bands,as mentioned about their description up above. There are a lot of strange effects to go with the music that make me think alittle of the Krautrock bands that existed at the time. The vocals are in English, but are surprisingly good!
I have the CD-R in which the track listings are supposedly messed-up. I've heard the music being described as a like Jethro Tull's Stand Up under the influence of LSD. I can understand the LSD part, the Jethro Tull part, not so sure. Alfonso Bou's (I guess) vocals at times does remind me a bit of Ian Anderson at times. Certainly Guillermo Paris played flute, but certainly not in the style of Ian Anderson. The flute playing reminds me of the New York Jewish psych/prog band based in Germany called Sweet Smoke. Anyway, let's get with the music: many of the songs seem to have that repetitive nature, like "I Can Fly", "When You Bring Down" and "Today It is Raining", but in a good way. Some of the songs have more jazzy leanings, like "One More Day". A totally killer album, how did these guys do it under the Franco regime? Probably by sneaking it under his nose and made sure the government never found out. One song I can live without however is "A Song For the Friends".It's crap. It sounds like 1930s cocktail lounge music that should have been thrown in the trash. They should've used that space for another song like the rest.Forget "A Song for the Friends", because this is truly one of the great, but totally forgotten gems of prog/psych!

I'm giving five stars because my TPBCIS LP has proven to be a great conversation piece so many times. Haven't heard the reissue. The track sequencing is sensible, with short poppy tracks alternating with the excursions throughout (some are strange, like 'In The Marketplace'); it helps this from getting boring. The PBC were not musical revolutionaries. They are still the best example I can find of what a typical 60's 'flower pop' band actually did sound like in real life, without much production & effects sheen at all. Sandi did have a fine voice.

Trettioåriga Kriget - Krigssång (superb prog 1975)

Great progressive rock band from Sweden, and this is a wonderful follow up to their incredible debut two years earlier. This album would appeal to anyone who enjoy's Yes, Greenslade, Camel ect. The guitarist is very skilled, and has a sound a bit like Steve Howe at times. They use piano and mellotron to a great effect also. The rhythm section is outstanding. The bass player is hard not to notice, as he seems to continuously challange the lead guitar, while the drummer is quite impressive as well. The lineup on this LP includes a fifth member credited as lyricist. I wish I understood Swedish, because the vocalist really has a great prog rock deliverence in his style. Still a pleasure to listen to, even though I'll probably never know what he's singing about. I do know the Bands name translated into English means,Thirty Years War.

Trettioåriga Kriget - Hej På Er (1976)

3rd album by the legendary Swedish Prog band Trettioåriga Kriget (The Thirty Years War), which was their most successful and most popular effort. By the time this album was recorded, the band (Stefan Fredin – bass, Dag Lundquist – drums, Christer Åkerberg – guitar and Robert Zima - vocals) added a fifth member, keyboards and saxophone player Mats Lindberg, in order to augment the band’s sound with additional possibilities. The lyrics were supplied, as usual, by the band’s resident lyricist Olle Thörnvall. The music is perhaps slightly more “conventional” than on their earlier albums, with all songs staying within the 6 minutes limit, but the great melodies and the exceptional performances are definitely a fitting compensation. The album is another classic Scandinavian Prog gem, which sounds every bit as good now as it did originally. A must!

This is more like it. A huge boast forward for the Greek cult band. Good production this time as Socrates alter their music just a bit, adding new elements to their hard blues-rock fusion. The band includes progressive and Greek traditional features making their sound more qualitative. Yannis Spathas makes orgies with his guitar, Tourkogiorgis sings like he never did before, and Dukakis and Tradalidis are perfect side-kicks, completing perfect musicianship. Unfortunately though, the fate of this band was never to escape Greek boundaries and therefore met only little success and recognition abroad. Great songs are featured here such as the famous "Death is gonna die" (later known as "Killer" from the Phos album), "Distruction", "Naked Trees" and "Lovesick kid's blues", all crowd favourites, as are all tracks from the album. This is definitely a recording that deserves better respect by music lovers and especially those who claim to like the music of the 70's. Fantastic Greek heavy blues rock album with excellent guitar playing and solid rhythm section.Recommended to fans of 70s heavy blues and heavy progressive rock.

Socrates Drank the Conium - Same (1972)

Very good effort by the Greek blues-rock act recorded at a very difficult time for the country (dictatorship), when the genre they played wasn't especially appreciated in Greece. Their self-titled album unfortunately was recorded with very poor production but features the amazing talents of its creators. Yannis Spathas is a cult guitar god who nowadays is taught about in music schools abroad due to his unique guitar playing style. Antonis Tourkogiorgis is still famous in his country for his vocals and his standout bass playing. The drummer Elias Boukouvalas is also a very capable musician. The band (especially Spathas) has been unfairly ignored throughout its history by bigger markets. Socrates Drank The Conium contains the band's influences by Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Cream and B.B. King and other similar acts of the era, and is characterized by straight forward blues-rock music similar to the previous references. There are many crowd-pleasers here such as the original versions of "Starvation" and "Underground" (later recorded as "A day in heaven" on the [Phos] album) but all the songs are good and will not leave the genre fan disappointed. This cult-album is a respectable effort which was only a sample of what was going to follow.

Akritas - Akritas (1973-space-prog)

Good Greek heavy prog LP from 1973. They come off sounding a little like an Italian prog band of that era. Nice lead guitar work, with a sort of eastern feel.
Fairly decent trippy electronic effects here and there. Lot's of keyboards ala ELP.
The album varies from improvised jamming, to more structured song writing.
It's worth giving a listen!

Axis - Axis(1973-hard rock-prog)

The album doesn't seem to have a strong direction but everything the band touches turns into something wicked. Hard rock, mellotron washes that could have become King Crimson's worst nightmare and Canterbury gentle touches on Fender Rhodes. Some moments lack consistence but overall this is a surprising recording from the golden age.

Vi posto questo disco che penso sia ultra-raro!(non so se in qualche regione tedesca sia in cime alle vendite ma ne dubito!) inoltre girando per i blog mi pare che nessuno l'abbia già postato...è un hard/kraut/prog con le tastiere fortemente in primo piano...assolutamente da sentire l'opener, e la traccia 5 e 6...personalmente le trovo molto belle! ciao ciao!

Questo disco non è male...ma non è nemmeno eccelso...secondo mè è rovinato dalla fottutissima voce femminile che secondo me è pesantemente stonata e non azzecca un tempo giusto mentre canta...sta fuori tempo ogni volta che si accosta al microfono!!!comunque sul piano musicale il disco è piacevole (escludendo la monotona Quasimodo shuffle...)
