Secta Sónica (superb laetian jazz prog)
non pensavo che la catalogna avesse un "suo" prog!sono dischi molto belli di musica jazz prog con elementi di fusion che rendono piacevole il disco nonostante qualche tecnicismo di troppo! un po' più tranquillo il disco dei gotic (preferisco i secta...!) sopratutto in evidenze le parti strumentali di flauto!nel complesso il tutto è assolutamente da sentire!

Second and last album, maybe not as intense as their first, but keeping a very high level. More fusion,plenty of groovy guitars and a very spanish flavour all over. Highly recommended.

Gotic - Escenes(1977 jazz prog)
You get a mélange of fusion rhythms, and symphonic-prog familiar sounds. The keyboards have a great vintage 70’s jazz-rock sound (which sometimes can remind of a soundtrack of an old movie) and along with the bass they are pushing in that direction, while the flute is going for a more folkish/symphonic musical style. At some instances on this album Camel comes to mind, especially The Snow Goose, but only a general reference, not in a clone-like manner. . If only for the last track Historia d'una gota d'aigua this album is worth getting. What an amazing ending. It’s a repeptitive tune lead by the flute and accompanied by the piano and then the percussions and bass join in and it all sums up synergistically to create a most beautiful out of this world tune. Besides the music there is beautiful cover art that comes along and fits the music very much. I like to examine it while listening and float away into those meadows of sight and sound… An album to treasure and go back to when in need (bad mood); on a quiet and beautiful Sunday morning; when you feel like listening to something that is light-spirited, but contains beautiful and enjoyable music. But not only then… One of my favourites and a recommended listen. If you need to cheer up, I definitely recommend this one.

Oggi vi propongo questo gruppo olandese che è decisamente sopra il livello medio della band dell'epoca...ottimi musicisti, ottime canzoni con un gusto heavy prog mischiato gradevolmente con una vena sia classica (più evidente nell'ultimo lavoro) che "jazzeggiante". io preferisco il primo molto più organ-oriented...assolutamente raccomandato!

Absolutely fantastic instrumental progressive rock from Holland.TONS of superb and technically perfect hammond organ playing by Rick Van Der Linden who proves why he is justly regarded as one of the keyboard wizards in progressive rock.For me he IS the best next to Dave Stewart(Egg,National Health,etc).Apart the organ ,there is a fair amount of the holy Mellotron and almost any other kind of vintage keyboards you could dream of ..If you like keyboard driven progressive rock this album is a total must ! And i am really curious how mr.Emerson felt when he listened to this outstanding stuff...

Tomorrow - Tomorrow (great 1968 UK Psych)
Mah...Sono interdetto!!!!no, non per il disco che è stupendo! con una quantità enorme di idee geniali e al contempo molto particolari ma piuttosto per chi ci suona! allora...Keith west alla voce...John wood (si quello dei rolling!), Aynsley dunbar (nelle ultime tracce)
e anche...steve Howe!Spero non si tratti di omonimia ma credo sia lo stesso che ha deliziato le nostre orecchie con un gruppetto...aspetta come si chiamava...ah...YES!!!!
Spero di non prendere un abbaglio ma credo di non farlo!di certo il disco (23 song dei diversi periodi di West) ha un non so che di più rispetto ad altri lavori del periodo e, pur essendo solo un accenno di ciò che i nostri ci faranno vedere poi,
è un disco da avere! Qualche "Highlights" "Revolution" la loro versione di"Strawberry Fields Forever" e "my white bicycle".
A fantastic work of very early psychedelia. Formed in the same mold of Pink Floyd, Keith West and Steve Howe make a powerful combination. "My White Bicycle" is one of the best psychedelic songs ever and the "Strawberry Fields Forever" cover is just as good as the original. A must have for British psychedelic fans.
The music is typical British 1960`s psychedelic style; somewhere between Pink Floyd, Traffic or Pretty Things. Most of the songs catchy and melodic, featuring great guitar parts by Stewe Howe.
Stunning. A pearl ... nah, a diamond. A somewhat forgotten classic from the Summer Of Love. Guitar player Steve Howe presumably went on to greater things with Yes; to me, this is his peak. Just fucking excellent British psych-rock. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Dear Mr. Time - Grandfather (1970 folk prog uk)
Reminiscent of the Moody Blues..... light, gentle english soft rock of a very easygoing kind. The rear cover depicts a bunch of long-haired stack-heeled polite groovers who drove trucks in the day and worked in the post-office, lolling about on a sunny day in Hyde Park or Kensington Palace Gardens, with a bigger bunch of Chelsea Pensioners looking on in amiable puzzlement at these rockin fellahs. Really quite charming in a simple way, like me. I own only a handful of rare Vinyl, this is a copy i got very cheap because its covered in scratches and virtually unplayable - this makes it sound even more of a strange time-capsule of that dim and distant infinitessimally small sunny day on the rear cover.

Josè Cid-10.000 Anos Depois Entre Vénus e Marte

Portugal isn't exactly what you call a prog rock hotbed, but perhaps the most surprising figure in the prog rock scene was that country's biggest pop star, and he went by the name of José Cid. Yes, this was the guy who entered in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1980. Of course, by that time, the guy had little to do with prog anymore. But in 1978, that was a very different story with this, 10.000 Anos Depois Entre Vénus e Marte. Here, he's loaded with tons of great analog keyboards like Mellotron, Mini Moog, Solina string synths, and created a sci-fi concept album about the destruction of Earth, and the two escapees returning to Earth some 10,000 years after its destruction. Musically, it reminds me a little of such late '70s German bands, like Eloy, especially with the sci-fi concept and spacy synthesizers. The big difference here is Cid chose to sing in his own language, which is a huge benefit. One big reason why Mellotron fans are going to need this album is one of the songs actually bears the title "Mellotron O Planeta Fantástico"! Can't argue with an album with such a song. Actually the first two songs, "O Ultimo dia na Terra" and "O Caos" are by far the best, most amazing pieces of music I have heard from the late '70s. Certainly the rest of the album doesn't reach those same heights, but it's truly an incredible album. It's too bad the Portuguese press decided to bury the album upon release, it certainly hurt Cid big time, and that's why he turned to more conventional pop.

Uh...mi sono appena comprato questo disco (insieme al secondo!) la sciatemi dire solo 1 parola...CAPOLAVORO!!!!questo disco è stato realizzato da una 8 "pieces"(si scrive così?!) band tutto molto bello con organo hammond pulsante, chitarre melodicissime e una sezione di fiati che accompagna alla grande le bellissime canzoni!questo disco è molto seminale (diciamo che ci si sono "inspirati" i caravan e anche altri autori!) Da avere!Un applauso alla bllissima versione rimasterizzata della Repertoire (dalla quale vi invito ad acquistare!)!ciao ciao

Dischi impressionanti!sono entrambi bellissimi!!!!i tedeschi non hanno fatto solo progressive e i 2 dischi che vi propongo ne sono fulgido esempio!Sono molto bucolici, ma forse dovrei dire medievali, con riferimenti folk che da profano accosto a quelli della tradizione scozzese (non so quali interconnessioni ci passino)...ogni canzone è bella e gli standard sono elevatissimi per ogni album!!!RACCOMANDATISSIMI!!!!!!!!

Ho poco tempo ma vi consiglio una canzone...ascoltate l'intro dei clivage (Moving waves)...personalmente mi ha impressionato per la bellezza!!!sembra di vedere le onde del mare durante la notte!

It is quite accessible for this kind of music; featuring mostly easy-to-recognise instruments and harmonies. A bit uneventful, I must say. Since it's quite easy to get into, you expect more to happen. Still, recommended.

Gringo - Gringo(1971 soft prog)
album godibile di rock soft prog con un delicato uso delle tastiere...è piacevole ma non essenziale...su tutte la traccia 11 è molto bella("i'm a another man")!un ascolto vale darlo!
Nothing special to say. Sounds like The Beatles, for eg. on track #2 "I´m Another Man". Good 'one shot' rock album in the beginning of 7o's.

“sometimes I wonder if I chose the right road or if I’m lost…” It has taken me quite a few spins to really absorb this Ohio band’s sophomore and final release. Like with the Black Cat Bones lp, continuous, strong bluesy overtones tend to drain me, my mind wandering off more so than with something hard or progressive to keep me riveted and rockin’ the place. I blame it on the unhurried methodical pace that envelopes three out of five blues-predisposed melodies, and as a result of that pace many of those pieces or ‘bassy plod over a slow emotional solo’ seem derivative of the last blue-based project I’ve heard. Either that or the blues influence they are playing with isn’t bursting with originality. Apparently the quintet’s 1970 debut, Declare, is heavier rock and less blues with both having wisps of psych meandering through them, but until I track it down all we have to go on is the self-titled lp. Mingling both musical worlds is the lp’s opener, a cover of Cream’s “World of Pain” with a beefier, elongated start, keyboard-laden mid-section and a short drum solo thrown in for good measure. This is just in time for the other cover tune on the original album, a more feverish version of “I Don’t Need No Doctor” by Ray Charles, which had already been reworked by Chocolate Watch Band and would be later by New Riders of the Purple Sage, Humble Pie and a slew of other bands. Fact of the matter is the few songs on this lp that are actually Whalefeathers’s own material sound like they could be refurbished tracks with longer instrumental nooks and additional ditties inserted here and there, especially the organ-ingrained “It’s a Hard Road (Back Home)” with its polite gospel-esque melody and chorus. From there the more soft-spoken “Bastich”, this time I believe a cover song by the oddball band Saint Steven, condones a ballad-like vocal approach that comes off rather one-dimensional and blah, then suddenly lights the way for more heartfelt sentiment as soon as the band finds the ignition switch. “Oh, Pretty Woman” is perhaps the liveliest and shortest track of the bunch with a clandestinely combative rhythm and some dominant soloing, meanwhile a somewhat spacey/psyche organ intro leisurely welcomes the more progressive “Shadows” to the family where keyboards and solos spin an imaginative web within each other. The bluesy aspect remains present, just not overwhelming me to sleep. As for the clean, unobscured vocals, only at the start of “Bastich” did I feel they failed to nail the sound, otherwise they merge with the music quite snugly. Chosen for bonus tracks are two from their debut, one being a less ecstatic, less surf n’ pop inspired, and less electrifying cover of Moby Grape’s “Omaha” and strange “Know Thyself”, a partially dreamy, keyboard-backed floater that slowly rumbles to a head toward the end with a moody solo, boisterous percussion and downright heavy guitar tone. Since literally half of the tracks are borrowed from different imaginations, it’s difficult to get a strong grasp on the band’s true songwriting ability, but if “Shadows” and “Know Thyself” are a foreshadow (in this case, since I haven’t heard the debut) to their talent, they should worry about covers like I worry about hippos in the Congo.

THE STORM!!!!
The Storm hailed from Sevilla and were acclaimed by audiences and press reviewers as one of the best rock bands from Spain. The combo was formed by the Ruiz Geniz brothers (Angel and Diego, on guitar and drums respectively) plus Luis Genil (organ) and José Torres (bass). Their debut album, originally released on Basf in 1974, is one of the Crown jewells of Spanish hard rock, and changes hands for a small fortune among collectors all over the world, especially since its inclusion in Hans Pokora's 'Record Dreams' books.This LP really rocks. It's high energy hard rock that follows the line marked by the big organ outfits of the era: Deep Purple, Atomic Rooster, Bram Stoker, Megatón, a.o. It has also a deep classic prog sound root, which reaches the top on 'Un Señor Llamado Fernández De Córdoba'. This is F*****g great!!!!!

Baron Rojo would be considered standard hard rock, but in 1982 these guys were the kings of metal in their homeland of Spain.
Baron Rojo have that classic heavy metal sound like the RODS and early RIOT but at times would have fit in nicely on the same bill as FOGHAT also, when they were tearing up the stage. Heavy guitars, crunchy riffs, pounding drums and melodic vocal melodies

“sometimes I wonder if I chose the right road or if I’m lost…” It has taken me quite a few spins to really absorb this Ohio band’s sophomore and final release. Like with the Black Cat Bones lp, continuous, strong bluesy overtones tend to drain me, my mind wandering off more so than with something hard or progressive to keep me riveted and rockin’ the place. I blame it on the unhurried methodical pace that envelopes three out of five blues-predisposed melodies, and as a result of that pace many of those pieces or ‘bassy plod over a slow emotional solo’ seem derivative of the last blue-based project I’ve heard. Either that or the blues influence they are playing with isn’t bursting with originality. Apparently the quintet’s 1970 debut, Declare, is heavier rock and less blues with both having wisps of psych meandering through them, but until I track it down all we have to go on is the self-titled lp. Mingling both musical worlds is the lp’s opener, a cover of Cream’s “World of Pain” with a beefier, elongated start, keyboard-laden mid-section and a short drum solo thrown in for good measure. This is just in time for the other cover tune on the original album, a more feverish version of “I Don’t Need No Doctor” by Ray Charles, which had already been reworked by Chocolate Watch Band and would be later by New Riders of the Purple Sage, Humble Pie and a slew of other bands. Fact of the matter is the few songs on this lp that are actually Whalefeathers’s own material sound like they could be refurbished tracks with longer instrumental nooks and additional ditties inserted here and there, especially the organ-ingrained “It’s a Hard Road (Back Home)” with its polite gospel-esque melody and chorus. From there the more soft-spoken “Bastich”, this time I believe a cover song by the oddball band Saint Steven, condones a ballad-like vocal approach that comes off rather one-dimensional and blah, then suddenly lights the way for more heartfelt sentiment as soon as the band finds the ignition switch. “Oh, Pretty Woman” is perhaps the liveliest and shortest track of the bunch with a clandestinely combative rhythm and some dominant soloing, meanwhile a somewhat spacey/psyche organ intro leisurely welcomes the more progressive “Shadows” to the family where keyboards and solos spin an imaginative web within each other. The bluesy aspect remains present, just not overwhelming me to sleep. As for the clean, unobscured vocals, only at the start of “Bastich” did I feel they failed to nail the sound, otherwise they merge with the music quite snugly. Chosen for bonus tracks are two from their debut, one being a less ecstatic, less surf n’ pop inspired, and less electrifying cover of Moby Grape’s “Omaha” and strange “Know Thyself”, a partially dreamy, keyboard-backed floater that slowly rumbles to a head toward the end with a moody solo, boisterous percussion and downright heavy guitar tone. Since literally half of the tracks are borrowed from different imaginations, it’s difficult to get a strong grasp on the band’s true songwriting ability, but if “Shadows” and “Know Thyself” are a foreshadow (in this case, since I haven’t heard the debut) to their talent, they should worry about covers like I worry about hippos in the Congo.

The Storm hailed from Sevilla and were acclaimed by audiences and press reviewers as one of the best rock bands from Spain. The combo was formed by the Ruiz Geniz brothers (Angel and Diego, on guitar and drums respectively) plus Luis Genil (organ) and José Torres (bass). Their debut album, originally released on Basf in 1974, is one of the Crown jewells of Spanish hard rock, and changes hands for a small fortune among collectors all over the world, especially since its inclusion in Hans Pokora's 'Record Dreams' books.This LP really rocks. It's high energy hard rock that follows the line marked by the big organ outfits of the era: Deep Purple, Atomic Rooster, Bram Stoker, Megatón, a.o. It has also a deep classic prog sound root, which reaches the top on 'Un Señor Llamado Fernández De Córdoba'. This is F*****g great!!!!!

Babe Ruth - First Base (1972uk hard prog)
You're ridin' shotgun with Babe Ruth... over land, to the Rio Grande. First Base comes up short of hitting for the cycle, but the group does go deep on the furious album opener, "Wells Fargo", making this disc well worth the price of admission. Cruising behind a killer riff, accented by a scorching sax solo and the killer vocals of lil' Jenny Hahn, Babe Ruth take a vicious swing on "Wells Fargo", as they head for the Mexican border. It's a wild six-minute and thirteen-second at bat, that results in a round-tripper. Touch 'em all! Toss back a healthy shot of tequila and chase it with "Wells Fargo" jacked to the max.

Sweet Smoke - Just a Poke (1970 uk psych prog)This group of self expatriate Americans, was formed in Brooklyn, NYC, but it was after having settled near the Dutch/German border that through intense gigging they found the success that had eluded than in their native US; never a “Charts Band”, Sweet Smoke had nevertheless all the attributes to become a real Cult-Band; I don’t know their live recordings, but the studio ones are more than enough to give an idea of the live potential these guys must have had; Musical educated, and talented instruments and vocal improvisers who could easily found their way out of the ruts jams often fall in, these guys must have been true stage animals, and the dream “species” of any live audience;
The line-up for “Just a Poke” is Steve Rosenstein (rhythm gtr., perc. & vocals), Marvin Kaminowitz (lead gtr, vox), Michael Paris (tenor sax, recorder, vox & perc.), Andy Dershin (bass) and Jay Dorfman(drums, perc.) and the album was produced by legendary Kraut Rock producer Connie Plank, who apparently didn’t set any restrictive boundaries and left tapes rolling while the band’s inspiration flowed freely;
The album consists of two 16mn plus jams (on either side of the vinyl), group compositions without verses, chorus or middle-eights worries, a sort of:”-OK guys, let’s do our live set” thing; and the truth is it worked out pretty well;
Side A starts with melodic reminiscences of Quintessence (may well be a coincidence…), with the flute embellishing the vocal theme or soloing with feel as the band speeds up the tempo into a mid tempo jazz groove; after 4:00 things Rock-up with the guitarists crossing their rhythms, licks and solo bits, and constantly finding new riffs to take the jam into new directions; around 9:00 it’s the Doors’s “Soft Parade” that provides the inspiration, initially with vocals and then in a West Coast sounding jam with guitar solos; but than the fire slowly extinguishes and when they get back to the initial theme, they seem to have run out of tricks to keep things interesting and the track dies out without glory;
On “Silly Sally” the sax opens a swinging Rock jazz groove, with vocal diatribes and reminiscences of Tim Buckley’s “Greetings from L.A.”; parallel wah-solos accentuate the psychedelic vibe as a frenetic bass/percussions and drums engine fuels the groove; around 6:00 is time for a bass solo ( with some good will, in a vibe similar to the one found in Canned Heat’s Woodstock show) that lasts for about one minute until the drums take centre stage; drenched with the very common at the time phased effect and taking advantage of stereo panning it’s followed by the full band on a percussions only part, with cow bells, shaker, bongos et al; when the initial theme resumes around 12:00 its time for a sax solo; Paris has a nice feel and makes good use of effects and is capable of holding the groove until the well rehearsed final band climax;
