Condello - Condello - Phase 1 (1968 great psych- heavy psych)

Condello - Condello - Phase 1
Surprisingly diverse & inventive album. Like the guys at Acid Archives noticed, it's sometimes like listening to some psychedelic comp because of the way it jumps from popsike to fuzz-driven garage stomps. Apart from 2 or 3 inferior tracks, it's a winner all the way through, thanks to great songwriting & production. I know it sounds like a cliché, but I would use the "lost treasure" tag for this. Minor lost treasure, OK, because of its lack of historical significance and the erratic "career" of Mike Condello. Those who only know the dreadful "Soggy Cereal" on Pebbles Volume 3 should lend an ear to this, they're in for a big surprise. There's a recent reissue - that claims to be remastered from original tapes and legitimate, but I'm not sure -, it's still in print, sounds very correct and I recommend it highly.

Cookin' Mama - New Day (1972 heavy psych)

Cookin' Mama - New Day

Randy California - Kapt. Kopter and the (Fabulous) Twirly Birds (1972 heavy psych rock)
Randy California - Kapt. Kopter and the (Fabulous) Twirly Birds
"Though fans of Wolfe, a.k.a. Randy California (the nick-name given him by Hendrix in order to differentiate from another Randy in his mid 60's band) are well familiar with the fact that he was a protege of the great Jimi Hendrix, many might have been left wondering when, if ever, Hendrix's influence would take effect. They were no longer wondering once he left Spirit to release this solo effort. Filled with heavy guitar driven psychedelic hard rock, Hendrix similarities abound, though I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a long lost Hendrix album, per se. But it should appeal to fans of the great one. Grades - 1 A-, 3 B+'s, 2 B's, a B-, and a C-, that last grade a totally out of place cover of Paul Simon's "Mother and Child Reunion" - what was he thinking? Original first issues came out on the yellow Epic label."
From RYM

"After too many arguments and lengthy bad vibrations Randy California decided to quit Spirit after the critically acclaimed Tweleve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus. Soon after quiting he had an accident and when he finally got his shit together recorded Kapt. Kopter And The (Fabulous) Twirly Birds album, something of a dedication to his old friend and mentor Jimi Hendrix. It's a very raw sounding album with a very live essence and Randy gathers Noel Redding (using the pseudonym Clit McTorius) and various other refugees to record this album. Rumour persists that Mitch Mitchell also beats the drums somewhere. California's step father Ed Cassidy, longtime Spirit drummer, also makes an experienced appearance. "Downer" is a prototype stoner rock song with sheets of distorted guitars, delayed and echoed vocals that give that twirly acid feeling and has that typical laid back Californian style all over it. Think Blue Cheer but with better riffs and superior delivery. "Devil" is even better. A classic track more laid back that most of the other material here with killer licks and excellent vocal melody with that stoned out quality that is par for the course of what is an acid trip entitled Kapt Kopter And The (Fabulous) Twirly Birds, very inspired. Influences ranging from James Brown and Simon And Garfunkel are evident but the Beatles more so with the rifftastic "Day Tripper", a song Hendrix used to cover in the days that Randy Wolfe played with with him before the Wolfe became California, and the more or less unsung Beatles track "Rain" which becomes an eight minute plus acid rock staple. Very unlike the original but this is a good thing. There is nothing worse than a band covering another artist's material and playing it note for note, making no mark what so ever and so cede a personal identity, trait. California adds his own dimension, idiosyncratic style and feeling to "Rain" as he does with the other cover songs. This is a great album slightly tarnished by the unfortunate production where at times the sound is very percussive and at other times a bit too low due to a lack of a decent mix, but the songs are genuinely good and mystifying. Recently this album has been given a CD release so perhaps it might even have been remastered? It would be worth it. Randy California was a genius among genius. But worthy of the title".

Gagalactyca-Gagalactyca (1975 heavy psych)

Gagalactyca - Gagalactyca

AGAIN PSYCH !!
VALHALLA - VALHALLA
(u.s.-1969)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Ascoltate!!!!
Early psych-simp.prog from a one record (1969) band. Songs start out rather simple and turn into massive fusion-psych-hard rock jams (take a listen to "Overseas symphony"and "Hard times" and "deacon")! Very good album!
Enjoy it!
Valhalla's only album was a rather haphazard mix of end-of-the-'60s psychedelic and heavy rock influences. Even if it's not particularly outstanding or original, however, it has its enjoyable aspects, especially for those who enjoy late-'60s combinations of bluesy hard organ and bluesy hard rock guitar. In its slightly overreaching, over-serious feel with a hint of religious pomposity, it's often slightly reminiscent of early Deep Purple and — more distantly, especially in the fairly penetrating organ — the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Graham Bond, and Lee Michaels. Throw in some more guitar-oriented hard rock with songwriting and riffs reminiscent of Cream and the "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"-era Yardbirds, and it's a little surprising to learn that this band came from Long Island, not Britain. At times, too, the record takes strange right turns into more orchestrated, skewed pop and jazzy tempos, as if they were trying to get a little more mainstream but couldn't quite iron out their more uncommercial aspirations. Some faint symphonic pretensions both add and detract in some ways, but there are some pretty commanding lead vocals and organ, which put it a notch above many other secondary psychedelic albums of this kind.
band info:
Valhalla is a symphonic rock band who recorded one record for United Artists. Mark Mangold, now a celebrated AOR figure, played keyboards with this Long Island unit who performed local gigs until management pushed the group to compose original material to ensnare a recording contract. Here the young Mangold honed his songwriting chops while developing a love for synths and mellotons which he would carry into his next band, American Tears. American Tears evolved into Touch and Mangold also formed Drive, She Said and has worked with Aldo Nova, Randy Jackson, and many others. He wrote Cher's faux metal smash "I Found Someone" with Michael Bolton.

Smockin willie - s/t (1970 great heavy psych)

Smokin' Willie - Smokin' Willie

This is probably one of the of the oddest albums we've ever released. Smokin' Willie and his sidekicks Jim Sarvis and Ron Frye deliver a sound and a take on some hits of the day the likes of which you won't have heard before. The trio blasts its way through two original numbers and its own singular versions of 'Whiter Shade Of Pale', 'Evil Ways', 'Get Ready' and the most unbelievable 'House Of The Rising Sun' you're ever likely to hear. There's lots of Hammond, up-front fuzz guitar, a truly thunderous rhythm section and howling vocals and as times it is hard to imagine this much sound being produced by only three musicians. Originally released in 1970 on the Ulrich Studios label (Ulrich Studio 3999) as a private pressing, the biker trio's budget only ran to 500 copies most of which were eagerly snapped up by the good folks of southern Indiana where the band enjoyed considerable local support.

Autosalvage - Autosalvage(1968 heavy psych)
Autosalvage - Autosalvage
Extremely metallic psychedelic classic that is very unusual and intriguing. I have a vinyl pressing that is extremely loud and far better than a CD issue I have heard. The sound is reminiscent of the crunching rhythm guitar / bass / drum sound of Revolver tracks like Taxman and Dr Robert with a dense web of counterpoint between tightly structured bass and electric guitar lines, a little reminiscent of Marquee Moon. The sound is quite fascinating and the dense counterpoint metallic approach is sustained throughout the album. The vocals are a weakness however - it is the tracks that really stand out as a tour de force of arranging structured guitar and bass parts. This is psychedelia but experimental and definitely of interest to fans of electric guitar and metallic sounds. Another fascinating one-album band and a personal favourite.

An extremely rare Mexican psychedelic / progressive cross-over album. On the opening track Obertura-Brillo De Luz there's a nice but long keyboard intro, which gradually gives way to effects and pleasant guitar but the keyboards are always around. The largely instrumental cut has a haunting feel at times. It accounts for almost all of side one - the vocals, in Spanish, come in half way through by which time a strong Soft Machine influence (those repetitive organ chords on Soft Machine's first album) becomes evident. The side closes with Final-Advances, a short, catchy instrumental. The material on side two is generally less progressive. En Caso De Que Mi Reloj Se Pare has nice keyboards, El Ruido Del Silencio is quite catchy and Final is a laid back melodic number with woodwind. Certainly an album worth hearing.

GASOLIN-GASOLIN (1971 Dan-psych hard rock-Vinyl rip)

Gasolin' - Gasolin'

A wonderful debut, full of poetry and slightly psychedelic rock. A great harbinger for the future.

Thunder and Roses - King of the Black Sunrise

LEAF HOUND - GROWERS of MUSHROOM (1971)

Salve a tutti!
Rewiev:
Leaf Hound — like Killing Floor — was one of dozens of other working-class heavy rock bands who sprouted up in England during the British blues-rock boom of the late '60s. They immediately found themselves in the shadow of better bands, including Led Zeppelin and Free (to name just two), which may have led to their short life together. They recorded only one album, Growers of Mushroom, which found its first release in on the German-based Telefunken label. Somewhat surprisingly, however, the title track and leadoff track, "Freelance Fiend," were both left off that release. This error was corrected for the October 1971 release by Decca Records, but, by then, Leaf Hound had suffered from various internal problems and already called it a day. The album reportedly took only 11 hours to record in Mayfair's Spot Studios, which may be the reason there's nothing too special about this LP. Nevertheless, it has become a much-sought-after LP by collectors (mint condition copies have reportedly sold for as much as 1,300 dollars). Lead vocalist Peter French — who went on to form Atomic Rooster and later worked with Cactus and a later lineup of Randy Pie — is in fine form here, and his scorched-earth screech may even remind some fans of Robert Plant. His cousin, guitarist Mick Halls (who replaced Foghat-bound lead guitarist Rod Price, guitarist in French's earlier group, Black Cat Bones), doesn't have the same guitar prowess that, say, Jimmy Page had at the time, but he's no slouch either, showing considerable skill throughout. Interestingly, the song titles — like the band's name — were taken from an anthology of stories by horror author Herbert Van Thal. In 1995, See for Miles released a remastered CD reissue which featured a rarely heard bonus track, "It's Gonna Get Better," the B-side to their only single, "Drowned My Life in Fear"; some versions of the reissue also have "Hipshaker" added as a second bonus track.

Fraction - Moon Blood (good US Heavy Psychedelia 1971)

Fraction - Moon Blood

This 1971 release on the Angelus label (Angelus 571) was limited to only 200 copies, so originals are worth a small fortune. Fraction, with vocalist Jim Beach bearing an uncanny vocal resemblance to Jim Morrision (although he was singing on Sunset Strip long before Morrison took to the stage), were often compared favourably with the Doors, although their quasi-religious message would probably not have found favour with the recently-departed Morrison. Indeed, this rather fine album was once famously described as the album the Doors
probably wished they had made! Underpinned by guitarist Don Swanson's superb Ritchie Blackmorestyle guitar work, this is an album full of beautiful psychedelia, acid and hard rock, at once emblematic of the era but not dated by its association. The five original compositions are all of the highest quality and the contribution of Beach's Morrison-esque
vocals place a stamp of originality on the recording that endures from beginning to end.

THE BANGOR FLYING CIRCUS-SAME
(1969 good jazz-prog)

Bangor Flying Circus - Bangor Flying Circus

I saw these guys live a number of times. They were practically the house band at The Cellar in Arlington Heights, IL in the late 60's. This album pretty much captures their sound at that time. It's definitely on the jazzy side of rock, but with some of the finest distortion-heavy lead guitar of that era. Their pumped-up version of "Norwegian Wood" is my favorite, with some outstanding drumming. Tight, imaginative arrangements, in a somewhat eclectic mix of songs.
