Gamma - Alpha(holl great prog 1972)
Gamma - Alpha
Dutch underground progressive rock, sort of like a garage-band version of Focus. Unfortunately, they have this horrible singer with a seasick sea-lion voice, kind of like a bad Vegas lounge singer trying to imitate Engelbert Humperdinck and failing miserably, who absolutely spoils every song on the album.

well...i don't like this stuff (this album and the next seems to me very difficult to listen...in my opinion this is the wrong side of krautrock) i hope there's someone who like it! bye

As usual, i'm very happy if i can help new bands, and i post here the request from my friends We're late for class. I "copy-paste" the original message, it would be great if you surf across their website and if you enjoy their music!

Dear Betelgeuse,

We’re Late For Class here. Thanks for your support in the past. We don’t pester our blogging buddies for space every time we release something. But, for #40 - a 2-CD best of called Another Collection, we thought we might ask. #40 is streaming and available for FREE download on our blog...

LIFE - LIFE (1970-71) (Rare - Great Sweden Progressive)

Ciao!

hi!this is a request! This is a album very hard to find of this swedish trio (similar to "the running man"group) Great prog! Unfortunately i don't have some other info (more info in swedish language to www.progg.se) Bye!

one of my friend wrote me in comments...

The band has a very talented guitarist by the name of Anders Nordh who started in a group called King George Discovery, together with a black american singer who at the time were living in Sweden.

SPOT - SPOT (1971-bel-great hard rock-psych)

An early seventies Swiss offering that showcases some fine heavy rock with a blues tinge and some excellent guitar playing. Includes versions of Donovan's "Jersey Thursday" and a particularly manic "Sabre Dance". Classic rock.…The best of Blues rock in Deep Purple-Taste-Led Zeppelin style. The classic 4-piece outfit shows the english strength of heavy blues-rock in fusion with the psychedelic influences of other swiss bands like Krokodil or Country Lane.

BANZAI - HORA NATA (good prog-1974)

This album is quite wonderful. I must admit I was a little dubious when I saw the cover, with the band dressed in ridiculous makeup and costume, but the music is superb. The arrangements are rich, colourful, and highly textured, with a nice variation of space and density. The band are very proficient musicians, but credit must go to guitarist John McO, who was once described as the most relaxed player in Belgium. His melodic lines are really languid and engaging, and I love the way he subtly alters his tones and effects during different parts of the longer tunes. Keyboardist Peter Torfs manages to stretch out occasionally with some very tasteful solos, especially on the organ. There are echoes of Focus and Camel here and there, but this album is so well played and composed that references tend to fade as you enjoy the overall music. The recording quality is also very clear and and warm, with fine engineering. The only let down was the newer tracks tacked onto the end of the album, recorded for their unreleased second album. These few tracks are more straightforward and unadventurous, with emphasis on lyrics and vocals, rather than progressive musical exploration. But buy this if you see it on import, because it's superb.

SPRING- SPRING(1971-masterpiece hard-prog)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Probably my all-time favourite album. The re-issued version of the CD contains 3 bonus tracks from the beginnings of a second album that, in my opinion, don't compare with the original material. If you've got the vinyl version, hang on to it - it's worth money. Watch out for drummer Pick Withers - after Spring broke up, he sessioned with the likes of Bert Jansch, Dave Edmunds, Magna Carta and Prelude before joining Dire Straits in 1978.

IRON MAIDEN -MAIDEN VOYAGE

MORLY GREY - THE ONLY TRUTH
(1972-Psych-west coast rock)

Morly Grey - The Only Truth

great album of seventies hard rock. Intense and inspired

Pretty good Ohio hardrawk with psycher tinges ala Closer To Home era Grand Funk. Some of it veers a little too close to prog territory but as a whole this is a stand up LP that is well deserving of it's reissue status. The obvious hit here is the single, "Who Can I Say You Are?" which is the most psych song and the catchiest as well. It mixes side two of Closer To Home with more obscure elements like, uh, maybe Brigg and Bob Smith, in a semi-amateur way that works really well. A fine addition to any psych collection

AM I THE ONLY PSYCHEDELOMANIAC WHO KNOWS THIS BEAUTY?NO.FRISBY IS AWARE OF THIS PSYCH MONSTER(HE KNOWS THE TRUTH-THE ONLY TRUTH)ITS ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF PSYCHEDELIC ROCK.

Crack- day of doom (1976-hard psych)

This is the second title we’ve released that originally appeared on the Tiger Lily label, (the other being the Velvet Turner Group’s eponymous album - RRCD040) and although musically quite different, both recordings boast the same high production values, with the sound on this record, which is widely regarded as one of the label’s best albums, being particularly good.
Tiger Lily was another alleged tax scam label, this time owned and run by Morris Levy, the head of Roulette, who was supposedly connected with a well known crime family and enjoyed the dubious distinction of being the model for Hesh in the Sopranos! During its brief lifetime the label released at least 70 albums from the likes of Dobie Gray and Richard Prior, as well as a clutch of obscure psych albums which have disappeared without trace.
Day Of Doom (Tiger Lily TL14048) apart from its rocking 12-bar opener, features some of the best hard rock psych you’re likely to hear, with some outstanding flute in the Ian Anderson style and some fine synth work augmented by some strong piano and accompanying strings. Many tracks feature some decidedly jazzy interludes.
A well produced and brilliantly executed album which is sure to delight the discerning listener. Highly recommended.

BLACK PEARL- ST(1969 heavy psych)

Black Pearl - Black Pearl

When Moulty, The Barbarians drummer left the band, the remaining members (Fieldings, Causi and Benson) moved from Boston to San Francisco and with the addition of fellow Bostonian Jeff Morris and Molcahy and O'Connor formed Black Pearl in 1967. The bands three guitar line-up created one of the first heavy psych groups, with strong R&B roots. Their first album, produced by Lee Kiefer and Richard Moore, contained nine short tracks, with titles like Crazy Chicken, White Devil and Mr. Soul Satisfaction. It's cover was designed by Eve Babitz.
The second album was recorded live at the Fillmore West in September 1968 and contained an eleven minute version of James Brown's Cold Sweat.
Bernie Fieldings also guested on Fusion's Border Town album.

ARMAGEDDON- s/t (1975 Masterpiece heavy rock)

Gen: HARD ROCK
Rewiev by M. Prindle
The album is excellently good! The electric guitars are EXTREMELY loud in the mix, playing hard rock that's about as hard as, say, Aerosmith but seems harder because, again, the guitars are REALLY darned loud in the mix. The songs are all very long (only 5 tunes on the whole album!), but delightfully diverse, from the punk speed apocalyptic "Buzzard" to the "Love Hurts"-style shimmer balladry of "Silver Tightrope" to the proto-thrash "Paths And Planes And Future Gains" to the Funkmaster Jenkins "Last Stand Before" before closing with the crackly blues hoedown hybrid "Basking In The White Of The Midnight Sun." The songs are certainly repetitious, but not dull. The riffs are just too cool to seem repetitive! Very neat vocals from Mr. Relf too - his voice has gotten huskier since his dorky Yardbirds days and, mixed slightly below the screaming guitars on most of the album, he sounds like just another instrument.

SALAMANDER - THE 10 COMANDAMENTS (1971 hard prog gem)

Salamander - The Ten Commandments

A fine example of early UK symphonic progressive, this is a concept album based on the Bible's Ten Commandments. Each track presents one of the Commandments. Nice organ, guitar, and vocals. Although not credited on the album's liner notes as far as I can tell, there is also some excellent supporting horn and woodwind. Very orchestral and pastoral at times. On some tracks the narrative style reminds me of Rick Wakeman's concept albums from the 70's. On other tracks, this is very reminiscent to me of late 60's/early 70's pastoral UK folk/psych. On still yet other tracks, the organ evokes an early Deep Purple feeling. However, the Moody Blues comparisons I've read here and elsewhere are not really all that valid to my ears. For me, this is a masterpiece that I highly recommend.

Joe Prichard and Gibraltar - Joe Prichard and Gibraltar

Very little is known about Joe Prichard or his sidekicks, except that the band, which hailed from Missouri, drew its inspiration from influences far and wide, resulting in each of the 5 tracks being very different in character, ranging from the power chords and staccato guitar breaks of the Jimmy Page variety, to the throaty sax of 12-bar blues specialists Climax Blues Band as well as the guitars of ZZ Top. There’s even a 9-minute jam a la Jethro Tull or Traffic with flute and sax giving a decidedly jazzy feel to proceedings.

EGG (superb prog canterbury rock)!!!!

The Polite Force (1972)

Egg - The Polite Force

Uttelry BRILLIANT stuff! I mean, how could you not love the bizarre and HILARIOUS "Contrasong" with it's off-kilter brass arrangement, alternating 5/8 and 9/8 time signatures and bassist Mont Campbell's deadpan vocal delivery. "A Visit to Newport Hospital" recounts the band's experiences in its "Uriel" incarnation with more deadpan vocals and funny lyrics. Egg however were no jokesters when it came to their musicianship. Dave Stewart was really coming into his own with a distinct keyboard style (chiefly Hammond organ), Mont Campbell was deveoping serious compositional ability along with his solid bass work (and playing some French Horn to boot) and Clive Brooks propelling things along in rock solid fashion. "Long Piece #3" shows them developing their compostional chops in very interesting ways, while "Boilk" shows their bravery (and/or sheer craziness) in producing a piece of what might be termed "Musique Concrete" (or organized sound), throwing in everything and LITERALLY including the kitchen sink at the beginning. Definitely not for fans of easy, safe inoffensive pop, but for those who love their experimentalism with LOTS of droll British humor, it's a treasure trove, DIG IN!!!

IL 1° ALBUM!
LEAF HOUND - GROWERS of MUSHROOM (1971)

Salve a tutti!
Rewiev:
Leaf Hound — like Killing Floor — was one of dozens of other working-class heavy rock bands who sprouted up in England during the British blues-rock boom of the late '60s. They immediately found themselves in the shadow of better bands, including Led Zeppelin and Free (to name just two), which may have led to their short life together. They recorded only one album, Growers of Mushroom, which found its first release in on the German-based Telefunken label. Somewhat surprisingly, however, the title track and leadoff track, "Freelance Fiend," were both left off that release. This error was corrected for the October 1971 release by Decca Records, but, by then, Leaf Hound had suffered from various internal problems and already called it a day. The album reportedly took only 11 hours to record in Mayfair's Spot Studios, which may be the reason there's nothing too special about this LP. Nevertheless, it has become a much-sought-after LP by collectors (mint condition copies have reportedly sold for as much as 1,300 dollars). Lead vocalist Peter French — who went on to form Atomic Rooster and later worked with Cactus and a later lineup of Randy Pie — is in fine form here, and his scorched-earth screech may even remind some fans of Robert Plant. His cousin, guitarist Mick Halls (who replaced Foghat-bound lead guitarist Rod Price, guitarist in French's earlier group, Black Cat Bones), doesn't have the same guitar prowess that, say, Jimmy Page had at the time, but he's no slouch either, showing considerable skill throughout. Interestingly, the song titles — like the band's name — were taken from an anthology of stories by horror author Herbert Van Thal. In 1995, See for Miles released a remastered CD reissue which featured a rarely heard bonus track, "It's Gonna Get Better," the B-side to their only single, "Drowned My Life in Fear"; some versions of the reissue also have "Hipshaker" added as a second bonus track.

ODIN - ODIN-(1972-great prog)

Odin - Odin

One of the truly great, but totally unknown prog rock albums. For the longest time, I thought they were a British band residing in Germany, just like Nektar. Well, it turns out they're partially British, with German and Dutch musicians as well. Regardless their sound is pretty much in the early '70s British style and would fit along side many of the British bands of the time, like Quatermass, Deep Purple, Atomic Rooster, ELP, etc. The album was released on the swirl Vertigo label, and due to its obscurity, one of the more desired titles on the label. The band consisted of Jeff Beer on keyboards, Ray Brown on bass, Stuart Fordham on drums, and Rob Terstall on guitar, all credited to vocal duties, aside from the drummer. If you love the sound of the Hammond organ, this album is a total must, often Jeff Beer played his organ with fuzz tone, not unlike Deep Purple's Jon Lord, or Peter Robinson's work with Quatermass (whose style was much closer to Lord's in that band than say, when he was in Brand X, which was much more similar to Robin Lumley's). In fact the band covers a song that Quatermass covered as well. The album starts off with "Life Is Only", a totally killer piece stuffed with cool guitar and organ solos. There are some passages that bear more than a passing resemblance to ELP, in fact it's the only piece on the album to feature ELP-like passages. "Tribute to Frank" is a jazzy instrumental that brings to mind some of Zappa's instrumental works, so unsurprisingly the tribute would be to Frank Zappa. "Turnpike Lane" features a lot of wordless vocals, and at times almost reminding me of certain Italian prog bands. Of course, the guitar and organ solos are more typical of British bands. "Be the Man You Are" finds the band doing a nice, laid-back acoustic piece. Certainly the vocals are no CSNY, but still a nice piece. There's also a cover of "Gemini", which Eric Burdon & the Animals covered for their album Love Is, and for those who know, Quatermass on their one and only album from 1970. This version features an extended guitar solo that neither Quatermass (because that band never had a guitarist) or Eric Burdon & the Animals version never had. "Eucalyptus" is a rather laid-back instrumental piece with some early string synth (not exactly sure what it was, but too early for Solina, and the Eminent 310, which did exist in '72, while being made in Holland, for some reason didn't get much use outside of Italy and to a lesser extent, France). "Clown" goes back to the heavy style that is most typical for this band. The album was luckily reissued on CD, and given the kind of music this is, this album would be perfect for Repertoire Records out of Germany to reissue. Instead a small German label called Living in the Past got a hold of it, making it not as easy to get a hold of, but if you can find a copy, get it! Certainly the music is dated, the heavy organ/guitar format of the music makes it obvious that this was the early '70s, but as long as the music is great, as this album demonstrates, I don't care. Truly an amazing and forgotten gem of British prog. If you like early '70s guitar/organ-driven prog, this album is a total must.

Help Yourself - s/t + beware of the shadow (1971-1972)

Help Yourself - Help Yourself

Help Yourself - Beware the Shadow

Great heavy rock album from these guys. Very nice cover art, too. "Reaffirmation" and "American Mother" are a couple of awesome, guitar-driven jams, and "Alabama Lady" still gets played quite a bit on classic rock stations. However, there are a couple of real clunkers, most noticeably "Molly Bake Bean," which is both poorly recorded and out-of-place on an otherwise good album.

McDonald & Sherby - Catharsis(1969 acid psych)
McDonald & Sherby - Catharsis

Kinda cool psych prog rock album, with some definite religious lyrics."Addoranne" is a mellow spacey 10 minute epic, followed by a rockin "Sharks Around Blood". Lots of nice keyboards, and some trippy psych guitar on "Space Beam".

Saint Steven - Over the Hills (us. psych 1969)

Saint Steven - Over the Hills

An interesting psych/prog album with competent musicianship and excellent production quality. Heavy in places and poppy/bluesy/mellow in others with electric & acoustic guitars, bass, drums, organ, layered vocals and sound effects. 'Gladacadova' is quite poppy, with an unusual, shifting rhythm, swirling effects and psychedelic guitar. 'Animal Hall' reminds me of a cross between The Pretty Things (S.F. Sorrow) and the Edgar Broughton Band, with elephant sound effects. 'Sun in the Flame' reminds me of a cross between Cream & The Churchills, with some intricate guitar playing.
Sounds a little dated now, but not cheesily so. At the time I imagine it was fairly cutting edge stuff, but probably came on the scene at a time when psychedelia was becoming unfashionable. On the whole, not a bad album, but not a great one either.

ottime canzone di stampo progressive (quella classica) Ottima e da sottilineare su tutte "in the dead of night" seguita (ma guarda un po'!)
da "By the day of light"...A voi!

I'm a big fan of Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Nektar, Gentle Giant, etc., yet U.K. is my favorite prog-rock album of all time. Great music from start to finish, with performances that are often astounding -- especially from lead guitarist Alan Holdsworth, whose solos on "In The Dead of Night" and "Thirty Years" are some of the most technically intricate and inventive, yet highly passionate, guitar solos I've ever heard. The interplay between him and keyboardist/violinist Eddie Jobson on "Nevermore" is also a high point. If you're into prog-rock and have never heard this album, then I would give it my highest recommendation. It's one of those rare examples of the perfect musicians coming together at just the right time and managing to catch lightning in a bottle.

U.K. - Danger Money

OK, here you find such a dangerous presence of one pop hit such as "Nothing to lose", but the rest is wonderful, above all the incredible "Carrying no cross", characterized by one of the best solos at the keyboards by Eddie Jobson, the creative and technical drumming by Terry Bozzio and the stunning vocals by John Wetton at his top, before choosing the mainstream music path, traced by the band ASIA!!A special mention for the title track , whose mood is in the vein of "RED" by KING CRIMSON and naturally the original "The only thing she needs" enriched with fantastic instrumental excursions!!
