SIR LORD BALTIMORE-S/T 1970

The really pioneer of the Heavy Music in the 70´s. Only listen track one, Chicago Live, and your mind blow away, in it you will find the key of all the haevy metal music in the 80´s and 90´s. Black Sabbath gave 70´s the sound of Heavy, but Sir Lord Baltimore gave the Heavy Metal sound at 90´s and the future, far away Sabbath. A Masterwork.

SIR LORD BALTIMORE-KINGDOM COME

Hard Rock fans, if you want to know who were the real pioneers of 60´s - 70´s Hard Rock and Heavy Metal you must listen this album. Sir Lord Baltimore is, surely, the most underated band of Hard Rock history. They are much, much better musicians, composers and innovators artist than Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath or Deep Purple. Songs like "Kingdom Come" are the Holly Grial of future Heavy Metal. This song will remind you at a bunch of 80´s and 90´s heavy Metal bands. Perhaps Zeppelin or Black Sabbath give the sound at the early 70´s Hard Rock, but Sir Lord Baltimore went far beyond, they gave the sound at Heavy Metal of the future. Their influence in Heavy metal history is clear and awesome. "Sir Lord Baltimore" is a really Masterwork: fresh, innovator, wild, fierce, four musicians with ideas far ahead of their own time. A must have album !!!!!.

ART - SUPERNATURAL FAIRY TALES
(1967-Good psych)

Art - Supernatural Fairy Tales

A 'progressive' outfit Art later evolved into Spooky Tooth in October 1967 with the addition of Gary Wright. Their finest moment was What's That Sound, which was a rehash of Buffalo Springfield's superb For What It's Worth. It's now quite hard to obtain but was included on Island's You Can All Join In compilation.
Their album is adventurous and quite unique British psychedelic rock. It's quite primitive in places, but utilises a wide range of instruments with plenty of sound effects and variety, although side two is a bit nondescript. Guy Stevens handled the production duties. It's well worth a spin.

Iota - Iota

CD issue of perhaps the best Rockadelic release since Cold Sun! Late '60's acid rock band from El Paso who recorded two singles in 1971 (both of which are included here) along with previously unreleased material. Superb late '60's early '70's acid psych with ripping fuzz guitar work, keyboards, orchestration, melodic vocals. Similar to bands such as Mad River, Banchee and Peacepipe this is pure Endless Journey styled US heavy acid psych!

EARTHEN VESSEL - HARD ROCK EVERLASTING LIFE(1971)

(Us Heavy Psych)

Earthen Vessel - Hard Rock - Everlasting Life

Good heavy and bluesy psychedelic rarity that goes for mega bucks (apparently less than 100 vinyl copies were originally pressed). The lyrics are very Christian and very evangelical, which is just fine by me, and there are plenty of them. But the music, ah the music is VERY good. Sharon Keel sounds more than a little like Grace Slick. Nice fuzz bass...extended guitar jams...organ...they sure do crank and jam their way though this meaty slab.

Blops - Locomotora (superb chilenian inst prog 1973)

Blops - Locomotora

I think this album is the best Chilean progressive album, or latinoamerican, it has five extraordinaries songs, with a impressing compossitional quality, and virtuosisims interpretations, I thik that this album is superior that any Los Jaivas Album, and I beliva that the less knowledge that the people have about Blops and others progressive bands is only the "show" (Muestra) of our culture that comes of the coupe d' etate (golpe de estado creo) Siempre he pensado que bandas como los Blops no han tenido el reconocimiento que deberían tener, como muestra de la gran calidad composicional que puede manifestar una banda chilena, ya que en nuestro país se tiende a censurar los movimientos musicales que se escapen de los parámetros estéticos establecidos por los que se rigen la tele y la radio, se rechaza usualmente lo vanguardista, si bien blops es una banda relativamente antigua, es innegable que no ha existido quien le iguale hasta el momento, tanto en las composiciones como en la lírica, y por sobre todo locomotora, la cual posee movimientos hermosos como los de el pricipio y el final de tartaleta de frutillas o Sandokhan, y espacios puramente psicodélicos, creo que se subestima a este tipo de bandas por no ser usuales o conocidas, o por no militar precisamente en ideologías políticas.

Opus-5 - Contre-courant (1976 simp. prog)

well folks... i've noticed that this album is posted also on superb blog ezhevika fields with another host service...take a look! (one kiss to Lisa!bye!)

Opus 5 were sort of a standard symphonic fivepiece from Quebec, Canada. Contre Courant is a very strong album, full of surprises, that takes a few listens to appreciate. The players are all very accomplished, and they clearly spent a lot of time perfecting these five songs. One interesting weakness, though, is that, although the arrangements are both complex and very professional sounding, the underlying songs are often quite simple, and I wish they could have spent more time refining what they were playing rather than how it was being played. The album sounds great though, with a symphonic but very active approach. The musicians here were all top-notch, especially the flautist and the drummer, and there’s a lot of great interplay. The album’s first song is “Le Temps des Pissenlits,” which starts rather inauspiciously with a trite-sounding flute melody that thankfully only lasts a few bars before a slightly less trite-sounding flute melody begins. One immediately noticeable plus is the drumming, which is energetic and thoughtful, and higher in the mix than usual for an album from the 1970’s. The song then proceeds to enter some new parts which sound better than the beginning, and it becomes clear that this band’s strength is the frequency of shifts in the arrangements, though the underlying song remains quite consistent; in fact it sometimes wears out its welcome in spite of all the variations. The second piece is the 12-minute “Il Etait Magicien” which is more fulfilling from a compositional standpoint than the album opener. It contains several sections and numerous instrumental breaks, often of a complexity approaching counterpoint, but not getting quite that far. It ends somewhat strangely with a long and quiet instrumental interlude on acoustic guitar and flute. “Les Saigneurs” begins with a long acoustic guitar intro before the wordless vocal sections announce the beginning of the song proper. I can’t help but be reminded of the Argentinian group Mia’s album Cornonstipicum here due to the distinctive “La”’s in the voice and, to a lesser extent, the active flute playing in the following section. The song features several examples of the band’s trademark trading-off, with two often very different sections following an ABAB pattern. Unfortunately, the main part of this 9-minute song is based on a somewhat cliché four-chord sequence upon which are constructed some elaborate arrangements, but again the underlying weakness makes those arrangements seem overdone to me. The last two pieces are the shortest ones on the album. “Le Bal” has some harpsichord on it and probably the most typically symphonic section on its album near its ending, which is lush and romantic, featuring a string synth. The actual ending of the piece is an upbeat piano-based coda that stops abruptly. The last song, “Contre Courant” is a short but fun active piece that reminds me a little bit of The Enid, but only superficially. This album definitely has a sound of its own. It’s one of those albums where the dramatic range of styles on all the songs (but lack of distinguishing features on any particular song) make it difficult to differentiate one track from another, and the entire album seems like one entity itself much more so than any individual song. I certainly don’t mind that quality, though. Overall this is one of the best Quebecois prog albums, not quite as great as the Pollen album, but at least as good as Harmonium or Maneige.

IT'S ALL MEAT - IT'S ALL MEAT
(Can-psych gem-1970-vinyl rip)

It's All Meat - It's All Meat

This overlooked gem seems to finally be getting some recognition. McKim and MacKay are two hidden geniuses of the late 60's scene who apparently were TOTALLY underappreciated at the time. As well as being the producers of The Underworld's classic single "Go Away/(Tied And) Bound", they created a band and sound that had no precedent in Canada. "Feel It", the first single, is one of those songs that to my ears is a sure fire hit - I can only wonder at how it failed to even chart. It's still powerful today; it must have seemed wild back in 1969 - probably too potent for the generally flaccid Canadian scene of the time. "Make Some Use of Your Friends", "Roll My Own", "Sunday Love", "You Brought Me Back To My Senses", and the otherworldy "Crying Into The Deep Lake" form a tremendous introduction to a band whose future work can sadly only be guessed at. This is a classic disc, by a group who'd mastered all the forms of its time and were ready to make a real statement. Once heard, it's not forgotten.

Still Life (uk masterpiece pre prog 1971)

Still Life - Still Life

This album started to be one of my favorite just after first listening. I can definitely recommend it to all early 70’ art rock fans, especially to Hammond organ afascinatos. This usually unknown band made really fascinating album with incredible solos and memorable melodies. It can be shown as one of the most representative record of these great times for good and more ambitious than nowadays music. So let’s start descibe all of these songs:
1. “People in black” – it begins with mellow flute section and quite soft singing but suddenly Howells starts to play his organ, at first slow and tender but after a while it changes to real Hammond orgy. This keyboardist shows us that he is a real master of this instrument. We can hear memrable melodies here, but first of all a lot of aggressive, spectacular and expressive solos.
2. “Don’t go” – this is the shortest and I think that the weakest track (only in comparison to the other songs on this album of course!). In fact this is very soft song, “chorus” parts can be even called “sweet”. In general it’s almost radio-friendly, but again I have to remark that organ-playing here is very “smart” and interesting, too.
3. “October witches” – another great track comparable to “People in black” but here we don’t have any doubts who is the main person in this band ‘cause Howells electric organ plays the leading role from beginning till the end. He makes many incredible things with this instrument (for example makin’ a lot of “slides” effects when he touches all of the keys with one short move).
4. “Love song no. 6 (I’ll never love you girl)” – it starts a little suprising with acoustic guitar, soft vocals and after a while piano playin’. But from second minute Howells starts to use his Hammond in really fury way. His solo is breathtaking and its main part includes repeated “sliding” like in some psychedelic madness attack. Another interesting moment is outro wherekeyboardist plays almost classic music. Of course I can’t pass over Cure’s vocals ‘cause he sings his “I’ll never love you girls, You’ll never love me” in really impressive & passionate way.
5. “Dreams” – first of all it has really stunning intro – some melorecitation which after a while changes to some dramatic almost hysteric screaming (in the type of ’60 psychedelic rock a la Jim Morrison or Arthur Brown). Along with cressendo organ sound makes really great atmosphere here. But this is only a beginning! In the middle of the song we can listen to couple of another Hammond solos with all of these murmurings, roarings, growlings and squekings effects which you surely expect and await for J. But prog-song couldn’t be fully progressive without some more liricist…and Still Life don’t forget ‘bout it ‘cause in the ending part of the song they changed their music to some softer and more poetical singin’ (in chorus type) and pathetic organ playin’.
6. “Time” – another gem from “Still Life”. It starts with pompous organ along with choir-like singing: “aaaaa…” and after few seconds Hammond begins riffing some insane, breaking “melody”. When this intro is over and Curve starts singin’ music tends to be almost conventional but after a while we can notice that organ become more and more important & omnipresent here. Near to the 5th minute of “Time” Howells starts something which can’t be even called Hammond solo ‘cause it’s a real, psychy madness played by lunatic in insane “delirium tremens” fury with more and more slowest & immelodic rhytm…great ending for this song and all impressive album.
Conclusion: this is “a must see” for all progressive rock fans, especially these who admire Hammond organ-driven type of this music with some psychedelic flavour.
If you are kin of Still Life, you will probably like The Nice, Aardvark, Bram Stoker, Beggar’s Opera, Quatermass, Odin, Rare Bird, 2066 & Then, Ache and Frumpy, too.

HÖLDERLIN- HÖLDERLINS TRAUM
(1972-Krautrock-vinyl rip)

This had been the debut by German band Hoelderlin (here still spelled with an “umlaut”) and actually what an amazing one it was. Actually it should be considered as one of the most stunning first works by a band ever presented whereas usually it used to be rather underestimated. I’ve seen it rated with 9/15 on a German Prog site for example. Some people are comparing it with the style of some country fellow bands like Emtidi, Bröselmaschine or Witthüser & Westrupp (musicians of the latter two guested here actually) which is only valid in some way with the difference that this album had been far superior to anything those bands ever released. The music they presented here was a lot different from the more classic Prog style they revealed on their later (also very good) albums. Being mostly acoustic with a broad range of used instruments the seven compositions here exhibited a quite unique blend of folk, classical, ethnic and some jammin’ Krautrock elements. But the latter feature comes here much more discreet and is mainly exclusively in one track (“Traum”) present. Thus it’s certainly not to be compared with anything from the LSD-inspired “Kosmische Szene” the band always refused to be part of and therefore had many juridical with their producer Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser. The lyrics (into parts inspired by their eponym) though being at times very dreamy and poetic are anything else than just misty-eyed romanticism but are containing as well many political and social comments, a fact that had been disliked as well by their producer. One could describe them as criticism of society packed into fabulous poetry. Most of them are sung by Dutch Nanny DeRuig in perfect German free of any accent thus I think it’s quite crucial to be familiar with the language to fully appreciate this record. On the other hand there’s plenty of brilliant music here to be enjoyed without taking care of the lyrics at all, played on acoustic classical-type of instruments like violin, cello and grand piano but also electric ones like organ and mellotron. Not to forget mentioning the magical flute play, the superb acoustic guitar and as well some sitar, tablas and nice percussion providing a slight “cosmic” touch. Finally I just can highly recommend this album not only to any fan of Prog Folk and Krautrock but to anyone looking for some unique and awesome music. It’s absolutely flawless (apart from its short length but just put it on repeat play!) and in my opinion can’t be rather lower than with the full score!

ARACHNOID -ST 1978

Arachnoid - Arachnoid

Well this French work is suitable for the lovers of such "Experimental Progressive music" in the vein of bands like Univers Zero or any other ensemble from the Zeuhl School...often "crimsonesque" and symphonic too, the present album is characterized by some dark tones, a talented and aggressive vocal style, but with a very rough timbre, according to a complex symphonic genre. This latter is never represented by beautiful charming moments, because its focus is more on the experimentations than on the melody...moreover the opening track is epic, almost perfect, nevertheless by ending on a pessimistic disposition, despite of maintaining an ethereal, ghostly mood throughout,is anyway a bit depressing. The third track instead is somewhat strange and at times sounds almost like a sort of such melodic italian prog album, in the vein of Locanda delle Fate, thanks also to the sweet performance at the flute and a different mood, which is finally less cruel. Their theatrical effort were a secure imprinting during their appearance in the course of 1979, but unlike Ange , They were not able to give new birth to such ghostly and at times melodramatic "prog acts"...

Carpe Diem-En Regardant Passer Le Temps
(1975good space prog)

Carpe Diem - En Regardant Passer le Temps

This album has really grown on me big time. This has got to be one of the greatest prog albums I have bought in a long time. This group, as far as French prog bands are concerned gets mentioned up there with the likes of Pulsar, Atoll, Magma, Ange, etc. and without good reason. The band consisted of keyboardist/vocalist Christian Truchi, guitarist Gilbert Abbenanti, bassist Alain Berge, drummer Alain Faraut, and saxist/flutist Claude-Marius David (who unfortunately died in 1993, according to the booklet included in the Musea CD reissue, but unfortunately no mention of cause of death). En Regardant Passer Le Temps is the first of only two albums and is generally regarded as the better of the two. This is one of the very few prog rock albums I've found where I can't find any flaws. Many times I have problems with bad production, bad vocals (or a band singing in poor English if they're from a non-English speaking country), an album getting hampered by a sappy ballad or two, awful synth sound, poor lyrics, or whatever, but none of that's to be found here. Christian Truchi decides to sing in his native French, and he has one of the more pleasant voices in French prog (a refreshing change, when you're accustomed to harsh French vocals, like that of Ange). The band has one of the more unique keyboard sounds I've heard, rather than the usual Hammond organ, Mini Moog, and Mellotron, Truchi used a Farfisa electric piano, an unidentifiable synth, and a string synth. So many times you see this band compared with Gong, or Camel, or Soft Machine. Don't buy in to that at all, this has got to be one of the more original mid '70s prog albums. For one thing, the music is way more sophisticated than what Gong did. There are plenty of jazzy passages because of the presence of sax, but plenty of spacy symphonic passages. The band is often placed under the "space fusion" category with the likes of Gong and even Ozric Tentacles, which is a bit strange, given Carpe Diem was quite a bit more sophisticated. Expect more of a symphonic space prog album. The album consists of only four cuts, but all are of the same quality, so it's really difficult picking out the best cut. Plus you can't beat the cover, which is very much in the style of M.C. Escher (done by Hubert Pattieu). Truly an essential album, as far as I'm concerned.

ASIA MINOR - CROSSING THE LINE 1978

Asia Minor - Crossing the Line

ASIA MINOR - BETWEEN FLESH AND DIVINE 1980

Asia Minor - Between Flesh and Divine

Masterpiece of prog rock in an era where you least expect it: the early 1980s. 1979's Crossing the Line was their debut, but Between Flesh and Divine is regarded as their best album. Asia Minor was a French band consisting of Turkish musicians playing mid to late '70s style prog in the vein of many of your favorites: Camel, Focus, King Crimson, Genesis, even Pulsar. The instruments consists of vocals (in English), guitars, flute, bass, drums, and keyboards (Elka Rhapsody string synth, electric piano, Hammond organ, Mellotron, Minimoog). On the opening cut, "Nightwind", the band starts off sound deceptively like Ozric Tentacles, but that's just for a few seconds, before you know what you're listening to is symphonic prog. Here you get some great guitar and flute work, and some atmospheric passages. Here the vocals are very much like Camel's Andy Latimar (not to mention the flute). "Northern Lights" starts off rather mellow, heavy on the string synths, with some space Minimoog to go with it, but then the music gets more energetic, with the end part resembling Genesis. The rest of the album is of the same high quality, and I very highly recommend this album. Great stuff!

Corpus - Creation A Child (US Blues Psych Rock 1971)

Corpus - Creation a Child

Nice blues rock from this Corpus Christi, Texas band. Released around 1970. Fairly generic, nice psych touches.

Mirthrandir - For You the Old Women(1972-superb prog)

Mirthrandir - For You the Old Women

A masterpiece, regarding of those times!!Bands such as Echolyn took a lot of inspiration from this band...such an important reference, despite of some excesses (the same defect which sometimes characterizes the works by Yezda Urfa); but these controversial concerns -as it can change the rate only- permit this album to represent the beginning of a New Era, regarding of the derivative US bands in the vein of Yes and Gentle Giant !!

Another band originaly from East Germany ,east answer on Hawkwind. Great sound&song!!
Members: Dietmar Ränker (drums), Alexander Stehr (keyboards), Manfred Kähler (vocals), Gerd Pöppel (guitar), Günter Briesenick (bass)

Freddy Lindquist – Menu (great 1970 Nor Heavy Rock)

Freddy Lindquist - Menu

CD reissue of one and only 1970 album by Freddy Lindquist, who was once member of the Vanguards in 1966, replaicing Terje Rypdal. Freddie could be regarded as the 'Hendrix' of Norway, a true guitar-vinking!! Great fluid guitar rock from Norways leading guitar-prince, next in line to King Terje Rypdal. If comparisons are required the album is reminiscent of Miller Anderson's solo album "Bright City". – freakemporium.com

Freddy Lindquist was a veteran of several Norwegian beat bands before embarking on his solo album in 1970. Moving on to heavy rock he produced an album in the classic vein of Cream and Taste – the comparison being even more apt as the addition of two help-mates made the band into a trio. The guitar-work on the opener ‘Sundae Sellers’ is very Clapton-influenced, although in no way just a copy-cat, and the jazzy ‘Green And Pink Little Man’ shows Lindquist is equally at home with hard rock. ‘Shakaro’ is a flute-led instrumental which nicely breaks up the album, before ‘How Nice’ re-introduces the guitar as the lead instrument for it’s own showcase. A heavy, heavy version of Los Bravos’ ‘Black Is Black’ – done a la Vanilla Fudge - is one of the highlights of the album, but Lindquist’s own offerings like ‘Women Running Around’ and ‘Join In And Freak Out’ are equally fine, and make this a truly excellent album. All the songs are sung in English, and have a definite British vibe to them, making them accessible to a worldwide audience. Always highly regarded in Norway, Lindquist is now getting belated recognition with the re-appearance of this release, and it should be checked out by anyone into classic heavy rock.

Northen Stuff!!!!

Hi folks!again nordic prog!Unfortunately the Yellow album has a bad audio quality!one of my friend send me this link and in the folder i have found this info:

"The sound quality of this release isn’t that good, since my old LP has suffered during the years gone by.
If someone possesses the old master tapes, please release the entire album on CD.
I’m sure there will be a demand for a new high-quality release of this forgotten jewel."

Haikara-Haikara(1972 superb Fin heavy prog)

Haikara - Haikara

forgotten gem in Finnish progressive music. Highly recommended!
